Volvo's, well the 850's are the same. The err somewhat expensive one that I picked up a couple of weeks ago had an 'incident' last week at the local tesco filling station. It was going well until I filled it with petrol, after that it wouldnt start with the key although it did lock all the doors when you turned the ignition key.
RAC bod tips up to sort things out and we dragged it over into the carpark next door, me being of a nervous nature didnt really want him mucking about with all that sparky leccy stuff next to a class 1 fuel pump and tank... flame me if you wish (ha ha... ged it?
flame...) but I really couldnt do with all the p*ss taking I'd get at work if a spark had set summit off.
Anyway, we dragged this thing over the road with me trying to hide behind the steering wheel in case someone spotted me and RAC supa mech had a poke about under the bonnet and comes up smiling after about 20 mins to say yer starter motors f*ked guv (or words to that effect) thats why it won't go. I won't say what he mumbled when I pointed out to him that the bl**dy starter motor had nothing to do with the stupid central locking (I had by now locked the keys in the car cos I had left them in the ignition and the central locking was doing it's own thing, good job OiC HF had her set in her bag).
In an attempt to save face, supa mech say's jump in mate and I'll give you a push start

He didnt even blink when I pointed out to him it was a Volvo and not exactly a small un at that and the boot was like full.... (and I meant FULL) so it might be a tad heavy to push... But no, he insisted so a push start it was... He got about 1 car length before deciding that it would be easier to carry on breathing and a damm sight quicker to start if he used his van to drag it round the car park for a bit. Once he got his breath back and his face had returned to a more normal colour from the bright red he was sporting, the car was neatly hooked up and ready to go.
Now the first attempt was with it in gear and the ignition on, nowt. Not even a pathectic swedish splutter....
But if you actually turned the key as though to start it by the starter motor while towing it (and with it in gear) it fired up nicely and kept running with the key in the normal run posistion.
RAC van was quickly unhooked and he was off down the road like a teenager thats just been told to get a job and pay some housekeeping....
The actual fault? Not the starter motor for a start, it was a combination of a loose neg terminal on the battery and bluey green vertigre in the ground cable crimps thus making high resistance joints all round on the earth circuit, in particular the final two lengths of 20mm cable that link the battery neg to the engine and body (there are about 15 other earth leads, each about 1.5mm that terminat on the battery clamp as well which is why it ran at all).
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been
Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered

)
