It might be slow but i can go anywhere!
Re: Online petitionJust to make one thing clear, after reading it, the proposal is for new cars under warranty to be repaired by independent garages and still retain the warranty , it does not prevent owners doing home repairs to cars out of warranty.
The motor manufacturing industry and dealers want to retain the right to do all warranty work themselves, which I can understand, if you tinkered with a car under warranty you would invalidate the warranty. I can see John Boys point, though it would be less painful for the consumer if the main dealer hourly rate inflicted upon the consumer was more in line with reality. To that end the draft wont affect you unless you use an unauthorised garage to fiddle with your new bought dealership car. Ste

Re: Online petitionThe vehicle should be maintained by a main dealer while the vehicle is in the warranty period then after that point it's up to you what happens. As they come more complex it's more than just a case of plug it in and see what happens on the brain. There are more and more software updates for ecu's which with out the correct access to the info cause all sorts of problems. Every time a vehicle enters our workshop we get list in the job pack highlighting the updates/service measures that the vehicles require. How do you know if you do it your self or go to an independent if the vehicle has the latest update ie for emissions and so on?
As for drift's point on dealers labour rates it's easy to say cut them back as they are too expensive on the outside you don't see what the manufacturers impose on dealers we have 3 diagnostic machines which cost £500 each plus updates every month, then £50,000 of special tools plus the corparte look and now all the targets you have to meet to stay a dealer the labour rate soon gets eaten up It might be slow but i can go anywhere!
Re: Online petitionTotally agree with john-boy onn this one.
Our ONE diagnostic machine (IDS) costs in excess of £10,000, its used every day, mostly rectifying faults induced by "independants" getting involved in systems they dont understand, then sending the owner to us because "Its a known Ford fault, they should fix it under warranty for you".....well I'm sorry but when you buy a car in 2006 and bring it back FOR THE FIRST TIME in 2009 and ask for warranty repairs...it just aint happening. The warranty is given by the manufacturer, before we get paid we have to prove component failure (via IDS) we dont get paid for diagnostic work and get paid for parts at COST LESS 10-20% and labour rate below internal costs (non-negotiable) So whilst the idea of block exemption is good....I can source service components from wherever I choose......if independants want to carry out the work we have imposed on us then they work the same way, at a loss on warranty claims that take up to 6 months to pay on £3,000 repairs!...see how long that would last. Halfrauds tried to run the Daewoo franchise if you recall.....the only way they could make it work was by over-inflating service costs back to the company.....which duly went bust and withdrew from its contract. What have I told you about Thinking Erroll??
