Postby Preedyfella on Tue Feb 10, 2015 1:38 pm

Hi all hope I've put this in the right place

Firsty hi all an thanks for having me here.

Just got myself a Frontera 2.2Dti 100k on the clock, just had water pump and head gasket done,
So I was hoping it would last me some time, But....

I notice there was no hot air coming from the heaters so I popped the hood an found there's grey slug in the water.
also the pipes to the heater matrix wasn't get warm?
anyway I left the fronty runing for 20-30 mins and the radiator was war and the inlet an out let pipes was warm but still not heater matrix, I went to check to temp and you guest in the clock not working

so guys any idea's what i need to do first as the 2 weeks I've drove this I got to say it be great an really enjoyed it

if the h/g has just been changed id say either you have an airlock in the cooling system so that would need to be bled ( im not sure if the dti has a self bleeding system like the petrol version or not ) or your thermostat hasnt been changed when the h/g was changed ( it should be changed at that time ) and its stuck in the open position ! either way id take it back to who ever changed the h.g . thats probably more likely if the temp gauge isnt rising
did you say a grey slug in the coolant or did you mean grey sludge ?

yeah sorry it's grey sludge.

I bled the coolant system and all went well until today I noticed the grey sludge is back.
A friend of mine said it could be the oil cooler as it runs fine no over heating or smoke was thinking of sticking some steal seal in as it could help with any other problems , but think just get a new oil cooler ???

If it is the oil cooler you can buy the seal/gasket to re-seal it. A new one would cost a bit!!!

Just replace the Oil cooler topped up with oil and water let it run for 30 min still some grey sludge but think it will take a few flushes to get rid of it out the pipes but I'll see how it goes.

other then the grey sludge there's no other sign of Head gasket failure,
no water in oil/ white stuff on oil cap/
no white smoke or excessive liquid exiting the exhaust
no sluggish or “chuggy” or loss of power
no Overheating

Well I'll take it out for around tomorrow an see how we go will flush it a few times an keep an eye on oil guess if it keeps coming back thick i'll try steal seal as I know that stuff is pretty good

fogman: Phoned up the place that did the head gasket and they said they are more then welcome to have a look at it (at my expense) as I wasn't the named keeper when the gasket was done.

Lets see how we go thanks for the reply's guys
