LPG or Diesel?

Well folks I've decided to change the fronty as the fuel costs are murdering me.
Do lots of towing with the car and the mpg average over the last several tanks is 12mpg. Motor is sweet as a nut, smooth torque big power just need to be an Oil sheik to run it.
So do I swap it for a diesel model or get the LPG conversion? Spoke to local LPG specialist who advised it would cost around £1500 for under car tank and top of the range injection system (fitted). Came highly recommended from a few people one had a petrol transit with over 500,000 miles on lpg, yep thats right 500,000. Although local garage who sell LPG advised not to bother as they've seen more customers who've had too many problems on gas including NHS company cars.

I would convert. You may get cheaper nearer the 1200. Ive had issues with mine, (i tend to leave it till it breaks down before servicing system) but like all things mechanical, the Lpg is no different, service it as required & you will reap the rewards.

have it converted to gas at under 70p a liter in most of the uk and a shed load of places doing it nower days.

on mine i get between 250 round town and 344 on a long run for £40 - £50 depending where i fill up and price on the pump.

the power drop is not noticeable unless you drive like a loon like i do a lot of time but i save £1700 for every 8000 miles compared to petrol so for the cost of a multi point injection decent one and a 90l liter in the boot or a 70l underslung tank so you dont loos boot it is well worth it.

i am on my second v6 and i still have the multi point system of the first in the garage tank included. the only thing i didnt remove was the inlet manifold that had the injectors fitted in it. kicking my self really or it would be a 3 hour job to fit the tank underneath run the power and fule lines along your chassis and simply swap the inlet manifolds over to the one with the injectors in and then simply slice the wires into the loom under the bonnet for the wires for the petrol injectors so the kit knows when it should be firing petrol and fir gas instead.

its a no brainer go on the lgp forums and see what local fitters are recommended and see what they will charge. it will give you a discont on the tax once you have it converted and notifiy the dvla that it is a dual fuel car now and the insurance i find tends to be cheaper with lpg as they think you will drive safer carrying a extra gas tank on board.

like e3jcr said go for it. ive ran lpg v6 for the last 5 years and the lpg system has never failed ive blown engines and killed the truck but the lpg systems have always run fine just service the system when recommended and you will find they work like a dream. youll just start winging about having to put 20 petrol in once a month not 100 every week lol

Anyone know where I can get an LPG conversion kit for a Fronty V6 (year 2000, 3.2i limited) manual gearbox.

Difficult to find here in France.

If I can find a kit, I can possibly get the local garage to fit.

We always fill up at the local Calor gas station round the corner. That is at 52p/litre at the moment. Means the girlfriends 4.0L V6 4x4 averages 300 miles for around £45 on LPG.

No way do my diesel trucks do that economy.

I have a v6 toy and dti workhorse, and to be brutally honest the dti is slow and underpowered in comparison.
Would certainly look at getting lpg if you think you are going to miss the v6 power.
Although if you are only getting 12mpg you either have a very heavy right foot or a problem with the frontera.....

Glad to see this subject is still being watched. I'm still umming and aaring about whether to convert, because the local garage where I get my fuel, has advised me not to bother as he has seen too many people with gas converted cars having too many problems.
Drive like a fairy and I can only manage 230 miles on a brimmed tank. Got no leaks only 71000 miles n it purrs like a kitten, must be the crappy 4 speed autobox?

I am not 100% on the fuel tank sizes other than the SWB has a smaller tank to the LWB.

if you look in the Isuzu pdf it reports 80L but I assume this was just for them in the outback.

I decided to find out as I could never fit more than 52 litres into the LWB petrol so I drove it until it ran out of fuel then filled it up. the pump stopped at 55L or so.

on that basis, would say its probably a 50 or 60L capacity at least for the LWB

can only get 60 litres in my LWB, or about 63 if i run it perilously low (gauge report only)

vauxhall brochure says 65L for swb, 75L for LWB, although that defies my observations above

anyway i guess its irrelevant, should calculate the mpg by how much fuel is put in, not how much fuel you think is in it.

Ok just to add a little, I managed to get 73 litres in mine £89.72 @ £1.23/L. Yep it was empty!
Just got 238 miles and it started to splutter, now thats an average of 14.8mpg - ish. To be fair there was no motorway driving and no off roading, but I must confess where I live is all hills. Still free wheeled down hills n wore furry slippers?

To digress slightly, I've had my tracking done (0 degree offset) and the car doesn't drive "nice". It seems to wander or should I say, I seem to be constantly correcting the steering wheel. It's got a 2" lift, all linkage is spot on but I run Runway Enduro tyres.

The reason I mentioned tyres is because my other car (daily ride) has just had new tyres on and the mpg is not as good as before, less 10%. I had Goodyears on before and changed to Dunlop both premium tyres.

Maybe I expect too much? Heated seats are nice at the moment sod the fuel economy :P

I work out mileage by brimming it and then when I fill to the brim again I take note of how much I put in there according to the pump. That way I know exactly how much fuel I have last used, and how many miles according to the odometer ;)

Lpg all the way I'm running my second v6 on it and love it 350 on a motor way run and 250 round town on 72liters that comes in at 40 ish quid so lpg is 62p a litre in. Nottingham at the minute.

My first truck I halved the fuel bill in the first 8000 miles I saved 1700 so would of payed for it self to be fitted if I hadn't night a truck with it all ready on.

Just make sure to fit the value saver kit as lpg doesn't have the cleaning products petrol has in other wise run one tank of petrol for every 5 tanks of gas or there abouts to clean the engine and save it. It will also run slighty hotter under load so don't be surprised to wee the temp gauge go to half of your canning it up steep hills a lot
