Do they rust

Hi Folks .Do fronteras rust anywhere in particular, I'am on the look out for a B series ideally a 2.2 dti auto is there anything else to look for in the way of problems ?.

Back end just @ the bottom of the rear of the sill/ inner arch.....usually visible, when you open the back passenger doors.
clocks might not work until you switch sidelights on (low mileage might not be all it seems), MFD will probably have pixels missing. These are some of the main
niggles that usually affect the B series across all models.
My knowledge of "DiESEL" is limited to t shirts & jeans , someone else should be able to advise on mechanicals.

if getting a high mileage one try and get one that has had the fuel pump changed as if these go you don't get much change out a grand. The later B series has a more expensive pump than the earlier ones.

As already said if you go to view one and the lights are already on turn them off as likely to be covering faulty clocks.

Make sure the eml comes on when you switch the ignition and goes out after starting if it doesnt it could be a blown bulb or someones removed it to cover up problems.

The 4wd is engaged by a button on the dash, you can test this while stationary. press the button and the green 4wd light should flash then go solid and when switching it off it should flash and then go out. If it keeps flashing it could be down to a vac problem.

Sorry meant to ask is the sport less prone to rust than the 4 door model.

Clocks can be fixed with some careful soldering, reconditioned pump is about 600-800

i've noticed frontera tend to rust in the frontera

Now now there not that bad they don't completely rust just the metal bits lol.


Quick indicator as to correct mileage is state of steering wheel and drivers seat bolsters by door. As they have a habit of collapsing over time if a typical larger fronty driver had been in it for a long time.

Looking underneath is easy check exhaust and front bash plate for scratches shows amount if off rising it has done as large center box and front bash plate show most abuse if been abused

lay underneath the rear bumper and look at the cross member tucked behind it, if any are going to show signs of rust that will usually be the first/worst.

Thanks Dean ,I was starting to get a bit worried but if its only the metal bits that rust well that's different . Thanks Fogman I'll check the rear cross member ,they can't rust as badly as a Landrover Discovery you can hear them corroding away.

Hi I've noticed my 2.5 begining to rust at the back where the pucks are I suppose you could call it the rear cross member area. The front edge of my bonnet is rusting, the door top edges seem to be going in one area with those rubber things curling up (have newer doors and bonnet seconhand to fit when Ive got time) and around the sunroof.
Oh and the front bumper is so evenly rusted all over that I wonder if the guy who had it before me was going for a rusty bumper look! Again I have another (normal painted) to replace it with
Considering its from 1998 I don't think that's too bad.
The brake pipes will need replacing according to my mechanic before next years mot as they have some corrosion on some of them.

Not just you were mostly over the large size in floating around 15 16 at minute lol but not seen a drivers seat that isn't struggling lol
