Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014From 1 October 2014, the paper tax disc will no longer be issued and required to be displayed on a vehicle windscreen. DVLA holds a digital record of taxed and untaxed vehicles.
If you have any remaining months left on your current paper tax disc from 1 October 2014, you can either remove the tax disc from your vehicle or display the disc until it expires. Checking the tax status of a vehicle You can check the tax status of your vehicle online (including rental vehicles). DVLA will still notify you when your vehicle tax is due for renewal. You will still need to renew your vehicle tax if your vehicle is exempt eg historic tax class. Buying or selling a vehicle When buying a used vehicle you will be able to use the V5C/2 - new keeper supplement to pay vehicle tax at a Post Office branch, along with the MOT certificate (if applicable) and fee. From 1 October 2014 you will also be able to pay vehicle tax using the V5C/2 online or by phone. When selling a vehicle to a new vehicle keeper, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferable. Vehicle tax will end when a vehicle is sold and the new keeper will need to get the vehicle taxed immediately before the vehicle can be used. Paying vehicle tax by Direct Debit From 1 November 2014 you can pay your vehicle tax online by Direct Debit either: annually 6 monthly monthly Whichever option you choose, the payments will continue automatically until you tell DVLA to stop taking them or you cancel the Direct Debit with your bank. If your vehicle needs to be taxed from 1 November 2014, you can set up a Direct Debit when paying online for vehicle tax. DVLA will forward your instructions to your bank. If you have been paying your tax annually or every 6 months, you will get a refund for any full calendar months left on the tax period when you tell DVLA you no longer require tax. When the Direct Debit scheme can’t be used Paying by Direct Debit will not be available to: first registration vehicles fleet schemes HGVs (paying the Road User Levy) Declaring your vehicle is off the road (SORN) DVLA will automatically stop taking Direct Debit payments from your bank once you declare the vehicle off-road (SORN). https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes i hate having Dyslexia
Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014What an absolute shambles. So if i go all the way to buy a truck off someone on a sunday. I cant tax it without internet acces and if Gregs computer is down i cant drive the truck home untill ive taxed it online. At the moment if he sold me a truck with tax and test i could go down and pick it up as long as i insure it. There has been no thought put into this what so ever, big brother is watching you! And being an arse!!!!

Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014I am in favour of the scheme, sorting tax out has always been one of things that i have always found a pain in the ass! Then there was the time i got the new disc and forgot to display it, even though they knew it was taxed i still got fined for failure to display. It's boggled my mind for a while as to why you actually have to display now as its all online and held in a central DB anyway!
Also it doesn't say anywhere that you wont be able to tax over the phone on a Sunday. But also i guess if you are that desperate to buy a car on a Sunday then you make allowances for web access and what not don't you? For people such as me it's a non issue, I do all of my tax and insurance online as anyway, the only physical docs I have for my car re my MOT and V5, MOT's will go the same way soon with any luck, and i am alway online Rule #3: Don't believe what you're told. Double check

Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014so let me get this right, if someone has just put 6 months tax on their car they then sell it the new owner has to tax it again? so basically would get twice the money for the same period?
Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014ahh old owner can reclaim as normal http://www.confused.com/news-views/blog ... tober-2014

Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014Stops all the uninsured drivers from buying a car with tax and driving it about.
Plus the wave of new anrp cameras being rolled out. To catch cars as fines going up and more cars breing crushed. Also means forgiegn cars have to be taxed if not here on holiday So should increase the pockets and reduce crappy drivers as there cars get crushed. It's one less fine for not displaying so I'm not moaning and the fact you can pay monthly should help those on tight budget cheers

Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014After working in the police recovery industry i can assure you that if a pain in the rear type of person wants to buy a car to drive with no insurance they certainly don't give a toss about road tax. And the ANPR camera still picks up no road tax no mot and no insurance! So i'm afraid the system is only going to impeed the honest person buying a motor to drive legaly. As for foreign drivers they realy don't care as i just been working with some and all they say is they cant find me as i come from where ever! How you gonna stop that????

Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014Not so bad tbh, on consideration I'm for it. As for the buying the car on a sunday lark they would only know that it's been sold and thus untaxed when they have been informed. And that I believe is via the V5.
The seller sends one bit off by snail mail and if taxing the vehicle the buyer has to either take the other bit in to the post office to get the disk or wait for the new V5 to rock up before applying online otherwise the DVLA will just send the disk to the old owner as it's their address on the record until such time as the sellers V5 rocks up with the new owners details on it. Obviously there is no longer any disk in the process, but timings will be similar. There is NO way our current postal system is going to get said V5 to DVLA on a sunday and theres more chance of Clegg the Snake getting an overwhelming majority and forming the next Govt than gettin a Civil Serpent to do anything at DVLA on a sunday much less doing anything remotely describeable as work! Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014There system is different to ours im affraid. Germany has its roadtax on fuel and its still bloody cheaper than here. The foreign drivers you are talking about are visitors on holiday. Those that work here buy a motor for a couple of hundred quid and just drive it, dont matter whats on it as long as it runs. If they get caught they let it be recoverd and buy another one! If someone want't to drive a car without any tax mot or insurance they will and when caught its just taken off them untill documents are produced. If not produced and no one goes for the vehicle in 30 days its crushed weighed in or sold at auction. If you look at our system over here its pants and allways has been, it should be on the fuel then everyone pays regardless! I am no longer going to make anymore comment on this subject.

Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014There is a plus side to all of this. at the moment 6 months tax is 10% dearer than 12 months but when this comes into force it will only be 5% or you can set up a direct debit and pay monthly for the tax and that's still only 5%
i hate having Dyslexia
Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014trouble with direct debit is if your skint one month and it bounces and you don't realise you could end up driving with tax and get done.
Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014The ringers will love this
Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014I am up for this scheme to be honest.
Monthly DD is a good option to spread costs for those on a tight budget. If the DD does bounce the DVLA will have to contact you beforehand and notify you. You should be given the option to pay the missed payment then before further action can be taken. Also people pay in 6/12 mothly periods anyway. If they are that concerned about bouncing DD's then they still have the option of paying up front. If your going to have the responsibility of owning a car then you should budget for it. Being skint one month is a factor and we have all been there, but if people cannot afford to run a car and have the responsibility of keeping it legal then you should wonder if they should have it in the first place. People without internet access isn't really an issue. Even if they don't have internet access directly they should know someone who does. They have to get in their car to drive down to the post office to get the old paper disk. Nothing stopping them getting in their car and driving to a friends/relatives house to sort it online. People driving illegally will drive illegally regardless. They just don't care. Bigger advantage of this is the ANPR camera's (on the side of the road and the ones in Police cars) will flag them. Markers can be put against the registration plates of illegal vehicles so they can be tracked if needs be. My only concern is the point Bobby has made about taxing a car that you buy at the weekend. Though saying that with modern smart phones and the avaiability of internet these days elsewhere (library's, internet cafe's, the person you have bought the car off etc) it shouldn't be a problem. Also it will flag up if the car has a dodgy MOT or not. No valid MOT or not registered with the DVLA, no tax. This is a good thing in my eyes as cars without an MOT shouldn't be on the road. Makes it harder for people to shift dodgy motors to the honest person. Cost savings for the DVLA will be huge. Not expensive printing costs, and money spent on all the admin behind the scenes. Wether we will see this passed onto the common person will remain to be seen. I am no big fan of the DVLA but they do have a nightmare of a task to perform and this can only make things easier .. if the system works. Remember this is not road tax. Roads are maintained by the local council. This is just a tax on those who can afford a luxury of owning/running a car. ![]() ![]() My members ride For Banshee the Trooper : viewtopic.php?f=46&t=34626 My members ride for Leeloo the Lotus Edition viewtopic.php?f=46&t=60154 Deceased My members ride for Brenda the Bighorn : viewtopic.php?f=46&t=54771

Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014I'm still struggling to see how they are going to police this new scheme, sure i understand they are going to put up more potential cameras, but for the police on the beat at times they use there keen eagle eye for the color coding of the tax discs to catch the dodgers out, that is of course if all the police cars are now going to be kitted out appropriately.
I am supporting of this but at current if your shopping for a vehicles with urgent affect and you've only just insured the vehicle, getting tax online at the moment is right pain, as the system just cant pick up the insurance straight away, let alone within a few days. If you don't have a post office handy(which i don't) it can be a right ole pickle. So i hope that system improves greatly! ...else i don't know... ![]()
Re: Vehicle tax changes 1st October 2014A bit of tax is a good buy and good way to sell as the buyer can take car away only has to switch insurance , now without tax its an extra hassle that part i do not agree with . They didnt need to change that . it will put more untaxed cars on road not less
