Looking for New TruckNot sure if I really want to admit to this on here, seeing as my Jeep has just died its time for a new motor, so tomorrow night I am off to look at a new truck and expecting a huge amount of stick as its a LR Discovery TD5, one of the last on an 03 plate
Would love a RR or Disco 3 but they are outside of my price range. Its gonna be my daily driver not an off road toy though Soon to be without a Frontera after 10 years of owning one
Re: Looking for New TruckNo stick from me! In laws previous truck was 02 model and from new had no problems
Re: Looking for New TruckI gave wifey the choice of Jeep GC 2.7CRD, Mercedes ML or Disco Td5 expecting her to pick anything but the Disco and she went for the Disco However I have always fancied a Nissan Pathfinder but thought they were well out of my price range but just seen 2 on AutoTrader for the same money as a late Disco 2, showed wifey and she likes them as well Tomorrow night will be interesting as not driven a D2 before, if I don't like it then off to try the Pathfinder out instead One big plus point for the D2, mate works for a well known LR parts specialist, can get stuff using his discount Soon to be without a Frontera after 10 years of owning one
Re: Looking for New Truckif you can find a good one for the right price i would put the g wagon in the mix..

the final Frontera ![]() and the duck http://www.fronteraowners.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=54084 and the white one http://www.fronteraowners.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=56305
Re: Looking for New TruckTo my knowledge the biggest issue with the D2 is corrosion in the chassis, they ain't made as well as D1 or classic RR
ML is good as a daily driver, had a 270 a couple of years ago and it did everything you wanted for a grass and gravel truck but with immense comfort. Regards Stuart Remember, keep the greasy side down!
Re: Looking for New TruckI just bought a T reg Disco, still got the SWB fronty, it's quite impressive.
It was once said that the Devil would never dare to cross the River Tamar into Cornwall for fear of ending up as a filling in a Cornish Pasty.
Re: Looking for New TruckI used to have an 02 Disco 2. That was a TD5 as well and their not bad motors.
For some reason their prone to the exhaust manifold gasket blowing and the early TD5's had issues with the retaining bolt for the oil pump sprocket unwinding itself and droping into the sump causing oil starvation but that was cured on the later lumps. The Landrover recall was to replace the bolt with a new one and thread lock All in all call good cars with plenty of room inside the cabin for driver and passengers alike although whilst I found the boot to be quite wide it was pretty shallow in comparison to a LWB Fronty. I used mine to tow a car trailer and even fully loaded it was still a nice drive
Re: Looking for New TruckThat's why I'm looking at these kinda motors, need to be able to tow the Frontera on a trailer.
Off to see one tonight, will be the 1st D2 I've driven. The Pathfinder certainly wins with luggage space, the Disco boot does seem a little miserly considering the size of the truck Wifey is not too struck on the Merc but they are a capable vehicle and seem well made plus they have low box which is a bonus when trying to start on a big hill with a couple of ton on the back Soon to be without a Frontera after 10 years of owning one
Re: Looking for New TruckD2 are good but chassis root, abs faults and its alway front hub that r £200 and front ball jionts are a pig of a job done 2 lots now with out the tool and wudnt like do anymore tool for the job is £700
Re: Looking for New TruckJust got back from looking at the 1st one, its an 03 model with leather interior and been very well looked after. However I seem to be missing that warm fuzzy feeling I get when I like a motor, maybe its the reality of breaking my rule for buying a car, never spend more than £1000- as up to now I have never broken it
This one has had a few tweaks, ECU remap, Alisport intercooler and Turbo Technics variable vane turbo and really does fly and feels very tight and planted with no knocks or rattles. Had a good look underneath and didn't realise that they do not have any underbody protection apart from paint Good point on the chassis Manny, had been advised about this by a few peeps and sure enough the rear chassis has lots of surface rust, nothing serious but would need treating as soon as the weather dries out If the BJ's on the front are the same as a RR P38 then I have the tool to do the BJ's but even then its not a nice job Got a few more D2's to look at over the weekend plus a Pathfinder, be interesting to compare the 2 and maybe the Pathfinder will give me the fuzzy feeling I'm missing with the D2 Soon to be without a Frontera after 10 years of owning one
Re: Looking for New TruckI wud have go pathfinder or navara all day owning a d22 they are great wud love a d40
Re: Looking for New TruckAm planning on trying out a few more th is weekend, found a Pathfinder not too far away and a Jeep GC and an ML, will have more of an idea once I have driven them all
Soon to be without a Frontera after 10 years of owning one
Re: Looking for New TruckI had a LR discovery td5 wouldnt touch another one it was a money pit rust buckets both rear legs were rotten. if your buying an auto make sure the box has had regular oil change. mine cost £1800 to repair i sold it after that. that was on a 02 plate.
Re: Looking for New TruckToo late, D2 it is, bought the one I originally saw when I first started my search
Having looked at alternatives and other D2's it seemed like the right choice for the money I had to spend Soon to be without a Frontera after 10 years of owning one
Re: Looking for New TruckFrom experiance of the nissan narvara that we had at work I would have to say they were a cheap builders truck for a reason, poor build quality, things such as door handles and trim falling off, they also suffer gear box problems ours cost 2500k to have fixed, thirsty beast as well. I really like the look of the pathfinder but would never buy 1 after the problems and bills from the works navey
