Forget traybacks, forget monster trucks...gonna build me an overlander type thing...
The plan is to have a 4wd vehicle that has living accomodation yet can tow a 4x4 plaything on a trailer behind it.
Most camper vans have puny towing weight, unless you get into the realms of a f350 yank, or a winnebago, which are out of budget and are too impractical...Yet building it with the frontys undercarraige means it should retain its towing weight, or most of it anyway, as the slight increase in tow vehicle weight will mean the towing weight might be reduced a bit from 2.8tonne as a larger proportion of the train weight is used.
Have just got off the phone to VOSA's IVA dept my new project is all systems go...
So heres the plan...
I have up the yard Kels old 2.8lwb, which I would like to something with other than break it....

and I have just bought a Bedford Cf2 autosleeper van that the previous owner took off the road to do a diesel transplant but never finished.

So the plan is to build myself a 4x4 camper van, using the body off the CF, and the chassis, running gear and engine out of kels old 2.8.
Will need to be IVA'd at the end, but having spoken to our local testing station at length this shouldnt be too bad as the chassis going under will be pretty much intact and hence ok already.
Going to be using all the running gear off the fronty, plus the dash and wiring loom and posibly pedal box and complete braking system. The CF wiring will be limited to just the interior wiring which will piggy back the frontera systems.
As the majority of the mechanics will be from Kels truck, it may even retain the plate, but most likely will need an IVA test and an age related plate issuing relative to the fronty. I get to choose what its called though if its IVA'd so will have to get thinking on this.
Forget the beige 80's look, thats going....this beasty is gonna be Silver and gunmetal grey instead with black bullbars winch bumpers roof bars, spare wheel carriers, a barrage of lighting, and its gonna run 33's on 10j's so is gonna be big. Think landrover tombraider, but applied to a 4x4 camper...
Interior is ok but tired, but it has H&C running water, a shower, 4 birth cooker, fridge, 12v and mains wiring etc, so a lot of the work is done, its just needs dragging out of the 80's and into the present.
Chassis is gonna be rebuilt and repainted before it goes under the CF, with all new lines, new clutch and all the bushes changed.
Told you this project is gonna be different, gotta do something to make sure I retain the "most modded fronty" award at next years annual meet
Started this thread here in gen disc as this is just to have a natter about the plan, will start a build thread in members rides once the cutting begins.
