swb v lwb

banter general discussions etc

swb v lwb

Postby Loneranger on Sun Apr 21, 2013 6:46 pm

Hi Guys,

I currently have a 2.0 swb A series but i am looking to upgrade to a 2.8 but i am undecided as to wether to hold out for another swb or to go for a lwb.

Just wondered how you guys with lwb find them on laning trips, is the over hang much of an issue etc.

Just looking for some general thoughts please.

Cheers Pete

I used to have a coiler 20l sport before my lwb 2.8 and I liked the compact nature of the sport but it always felt a bit unnerving on the road and not as sure footed as the lwb.
Off road it was more manoeuvrable.
The lwb as I hinted is more solid and sure footed and confident on the road and off road of course its is not as agile in close areas like woods but it also is less likely to cross axle due to the longer wheel base.
The over hang on the lwb is not massive in comparison to other 4x4's and never hindered me (few dents over 7 years) unless your going in for punch hunts and various comps its not really n issue with a minimal lift.

Oh and I sometimes camp in my car, space helps but the sport in its defence can roll the seat right back once you remove the head reast.

Basically its horses for courses.

I still have both, and after this weekend in the lakes, im sold on the fact that for laning i prefer the LWB but for P&P type places the SWB has the edge.
I too slept in mine this weekend, which was ok but im 6'1" and had to use my bed chair as im to long to just lay in the back.
I will be taking the tent next time!
There was only 1 place we visited were the SWB wouldve been a better choice, but that was the last lane and had a really tight and steep 'S' bend with slippery rocks and a waterfall in a deep ravene along side, we needed a couple of fancy moves to get through but we all managed it with a little help from each other, and the odd broken engine mount  :silent:
Go long if it isnt just a toy pal, much more usefull
IF ITS NOT BROKE, YOUR NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH!!

You know my veiws on this Pete, shorty every time. As you are aware some of the lanes we do make a Disco struggle on 100 inch wheel base (and RR bust their diffs), a Fronty LWB is close on 109 inches, though for business use you'd get a lot more in the LWB with the second seat row up.

Cheers

I've had both, SWB was better for turning off road but i prefer the LWB for everything now. Off road feels planted, not had issues with clearance on 2" lift, on road is comfortable and spacious. I always have rear seats down for tools and stuff but when they're up with people in them, everyone comments on the space and comfort. Plus, 5 doors for the girlfriend and their mates getting in and out is much better! Haha, some of the times in short skirts/dresses going out to town in the SWB getting in and out was hilarious to watch! 8)

I know Stuart, i do love driving the swb but as mentioned when selling the Ranger i am drawn to the LWB, more for work reasons than any other.

All food for thought.
