Very impressed off road but mpg poorWe had a day out in Derbyshire on Sunday, did about 25 lanes and really enjoyed it the 2.0 sport did us proud, kept up with the modified discos we were out with, only let us down on the muddy stuff ( my fault for selling my mud tyres ) the only thing I am not happy with is the mpg, it's did 19 mpg and around town I am getting 14 mpg that's short trips, done a service on it filters , new plugs , brakes not binding , really don't want to get another diesel but unless I can get the mpg up a bit more I might have to any advice would be much appreciated Dave

Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorThat MPG sounds perfectly normal for a 2.0 sport. Both mine (including the current one) do that sort of MPG
Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorwell i sort of agree.. town i used to get 20-23 and moterway was 35+ tho (befor all the mods)

Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorI would not mind 20-23 around town but 14 is a bit low I was getting 16-18 out of the v6 and drove that hard , will nip down about 12 Bobby if that's ok

Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorI would be fascinated to know how a truck which had a combined MPG of 23 when leaving the factory brand new arrives with you 20 years later and can almost double the MPG
Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorI find that a flatbed can really improve your mpg a lot!

Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorI never said you said your 40MPG was combined.
I don't care how light your right foot is a 2.0 sport can't manage 40 mpg. Can you tell me how you calculated this figure ?
Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorfilled my take up to the max near Edinburgh then took a 500 ish mile drive back home...
droped the tank to change the carrier when i got back. found about 20l in there (and yes i did measure it) then did the simple maths and i am not the only one who has had 40ish mpg out of theres and just to add point my 2.3 super charged merc does about 40 as well. even tho the book says 35 max CARTREK

Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorDid you remove the tank from the Merc as well ? I also struggle to believe you measured precisely how much fuel you had in your tank.
Regardless , you are deluded if you think you get 40MPG from a 2.0 .
Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorthe merc no, but that is mostly filled up. so i use from the top of the tank to each fill
and yes i did measure the fuel. as i was not lifting it up full of fuel so i have 4 gerry cans full of it sitting around as i fitted it. but believe it or not. but if driven correctly and maintained right you should be able to get 35 on a motorway's i believe. and if you look at different places some say 29 to 35 for max mpg as mine got a service every 5k miles and that was everything... fuel/oil/air done as well it all depends on what fuel you are using as well. since most super market fuels i found i get less mpg than a branded one, and again super is even better and with my fronty i used to do one tank of normal, and one of super. Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorYou're changing your mind.
We have gone from 40MPG on a motorway to 35 MPG on a motorway The @ 56mph consumption figures are exactly that. I.e. a constant uninterrupted 56mph , no stopping , no accelerating to move round a lorry, no slowing down for congestion and the accelerating back up to the 56mph. In other words it's nonsense and virtually unachievable. Now, given that the 56mph figure for a 2.0 is in the low 30's MPG, and was conducted on a brand new shiny Fronty , what makes you think your 20 year jalopy with a new air filter and oil filter is capable of exceeding these figures ?
Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poori am not not changing anything.
on really long trips i could push the 40 mark.. as in 300miles + and shorter ones 100miles + i was getting about 35 and remember that figure is based on the 5.13 diff not the 4.88 and running on 235/75 r15 stock tyres, not the 255/75r15's as well i would like to point out the stock pressure for the tyres of 23psi. thus if you add all the little things together you will find it adds up to a bigger difference. the tyre pressure being a big one as well in 20 years the quality of fuel has gotten better. Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorJust my thoughts.
I have a v6 swb with a 2 inch lift 31 tyres, winch and winch bumper. I regularly go laning with Tom who has a 2.0 with the same mods. When we do the same journey ( motorway and a roads) we both get about 21 mpg tops. That is driving like little miss daisy as Tom don't no how to put his foot down I have also owned a 2.0 with a small lift and 31 tyres, and the best mpg figure I could get was 20 mpg. Generally it would be about 17 mpg with driving on the road and abit of laning Your mpg sounds about right but with a good service you could achieve a few more mpg but not much. Hope this helps
Re: Very impressed off road but mpg poorThank you Colley.
