Re: 2.2 A series or B series.Early leaf suspension A series had 20l and 2.4 petrol then 2.3 diesel then the later A series with coil suspension had 2.2 petrol and 2.8 and 2.5 diesel.
The B series where just 2.2 petrol and 2.2dti diesel. Ste

Re: 2.2 A series or B series.Hi,
Can you tell me what the engine number is that you have or are checking up about? There are a couple of differences in the engines but some parts are the same. X22XE - this was probably installed in the Late A series and up to 1998. In some early 1999 B' series. From late 1999 the X22SE unit took over in the B series. differences are that in the X22XE there was no bottom end balancers fitted as these came in on the X22SE. The oil pumps are different types and also have different oil pickup pipes. either oval or round and they route round the sump on different sides. The X22SE also had a different sump, as this came in 2 parts. The sump bowl itself and spacer. If you are looking to put an X22XE into a B series then you will need to swap out the sump for the sump spacer and sump bowl otherwise it will not fit to the gearbox bell housing properly. You will find difficulty as the oil dipstick is in a different position ( at the rear of the engine rather than the front - which was also shorter ) and as there is no hole in the sump plate for the dipstick then it will not fit! ( though can be bent a bit ) You will also have an oil cooler radiator on the X22SE and pipework to the oil pump through a couple of banjo bolts. This was also changed for a cooler that sits above the oil filter linked to the cooling system on the X22SE's. otherwise the heads are the same, block is the same. There are 3 types of pistons that I know of, but other than what I have suggested above, as long as you replace the whole unit, then you should be ok! so any short block will fit with any head from X22XE, X22SE or Y22SE.
