Desiel or Petrol

Looking at getting another fronty, i was wondering ifthere were any advantages in having either deisel or petrol models other than the economy side of things. It will be used to potter about and to do a little off roading/green laning.

LWB or SWB?

These do affect the answers substantially if memory serves....

Well budgets about a grand....so not sure really. I sold my last v reg one for 700, struggling to find any under 1200 now and they are older than that.

my 2.0 swb a series was good for insurance and off road fun but i much prefer my 2.8 lwb a series. I'm no master on which is better and i think it can be argued as to how its being used really

The price of parts for them will bring you back to Vauxhall.
Back when I was lorry driving, 6 of the other drivers had them. All of them needed fuel pumps while I was there. The cheapest any of the lads paid for repairs was £800. And that was the pump alone and him fitting it himself. That put me off Pajero's and Shoguns for good.

Found a couple to look at tomorrow, one is a LWB 2.5 TDS, one a SWB 2.0s petrol, both P plate, both llok nice and in good nick.

I want something that will start in the wet, wont conk out going through fords, muddy pools etc. handles well on and off road as i want to have some fun with it.

So which you you folks go for and why???

There are for and against for both types of vehicle it all comes down to personal choice. Like me I prefer my "A"Series Shorty but I do use my mate 2.8LWB sometimes for towing the car transporter trailer as its better for that sort of thing.

Think im settled on a fronty, the swb i found is petrol and from what i have found they do 23mpg vs around 31mpg which is quite a difference.

The 2.0 SWB is slow , underpowered and not a lot of use for towing. On the plus side the heater gets hot enough to take a layer of skin off your face within 5 minutes, it looks great compared to a LWB and you can walk around the engine bay

its a shame you are to far away as i no a bloke who wants to get rid off his frontera for only £250 drive away its a short wheel base petrol got nothing on it but its very clean just had its belts done going cheap as he wants it off the drive if i had the money i would have had it as a second car its been well looked after just that he has to many motors and needs to get rid

Well ive had a good few frontys now and im a big v6 fan but since ive had the 2.5tds i have to admit i really like it, its got enough grunt, it drives well on and off road,its pretty good on fuel and it pleasantly surprised me yesterday out in the peak and we did a couple of really rough lanes which it took in its stride and never broke a sweat, unlike me cos the heater is amazing in the bloody thing!!

Well I settled for an "S" Reg SWB 2.0 in the end, it's virtually identical to my "M" reg one.
Got it off Autotrader for £500 taxed and MOT'd until next year, dropped from £595 eventually.
Known problems, but hopefully an easy fix, brakes need a bit of attention pulling to one side a bit, drivers window has a broken clip causing it to keep coming off it's runners and the tailgate catch is a bit stiff through lack of use.
I assume although it's 1999 it's still an"A" Series facelift with an X20 engine.
Will bits off my "M" reg fit this one?
Not got it home yet so no photos, and it's still bl00dy raining.

If it's a 2.0 then it's an A-series, yes - should indeed be an X20 engine.
Will be one of the last of the line though, the B-series came in around then. The dash and front doorcards will be different due to the facelift, although most everything else should fit. Maybe even engine bits, too.
