Taxing car with only green slip ?

Hi all

Got a new car this week, problem is I only have the green part of the log book, which has been stamped for tax before but I need to tax it as its out of tax now. The kid I bought it off I know and he has lost the log book, and so the slip is from when he had bought it but he had to use it to tax the car. Now I know I can apply for a new logbook but that may take upTo 4 weeks to come and need the car on the road before then if I can. So was just wondering if anyone knows if I can use the green slip even though its been stamped to tax the car in the past ?

Generally speaking Main Post Offices won't issue a tax disk if the slip has been stamped.
If you've got a decent local sub office that still do road tax then you might be able to explain the situation and they may be a bit more flexible but I doubt it.

If you know the Guy you bought the car from and the car's insured why not just use the online service to tax it and grab the disk from him when it arrives through the post ? In the mean time you can fill in the V5 application and get it posted off.

The other option is to go to a DVLA office with your V5 application filled in and proof of insurance, MOT, etc and they'll issue you one from there.

once it's been stamped that's it you cant use it again. if you know the lad you got it off and it is in his name he can still tax it at a dvla office by filling in the correct forms and saying the log book didn't come through, then you can get the new green part etc when it comes through to him

I think you might struggle taxing that online mate...I am assuming that the green slip is the one he was given when he bought the car, and then he subsequently lost the log book that was issued to him. That would mean that the document number on your green slip has been superseded, and the dvla website then wont take it, as it needs the document number from the current reg document.
Only way you can do it is either try a local post office and see if you can blag it, and then send off for a new V5c, but you will probably have to pay for the new logbook as your green slip is not from the log book that the previous owner had as he lost it, yours is from a previous one, so expect them not to accept this for a free log book issue and charge you £20 IIRC instead.

The easiest way (and the way to suss if the seller actually lost the logbook, or never had one ) is to ask him for the tax reminder.
If he was the registered keeper then he will have been sent a tax reminder for the car, the reference number on which you can use online to tax the vehicle. If he claims he wasnt sent one, or has lost that as well, I would be kinda suspicious that he has been running it round unregistered (or rather still registered to the keeper before him), in which case be very careful in recording and documenting the exact dates that you acquired the vehicle ( and maybe putting in a safe place anything that can to substantiate this date), as it could be that this car has all sorts of outstanding stuff on it.

Unless im missing something here, why can't you just go to the post office, pull out a V62 form (no logbook) and fill that out with your tax form to tax the car?

Or download a V62 from DVLA site first and fill it in before you go.
