2.2 sintra diesel problem

Postby pionex on Thu Oct 11, 2012 11:03 pm

Hi guys, new to this forum and looking for some advise,

I have the 2.2 sintra diesel car which i believe is the same engine as the fronty 2.2 diesel with the x22dth engine, my problem is as follows, the wife had travelled about 1 mile when thick grey smoke poured from the rear end, she pulled up immediately and phoned the AA who took one look at the dipstick and informed her it had to much oil in the car!!!! on further inspection i relalised it was a mixture of oil and water, first suspect was the oil cooler so this replaced and the fault still existed, then it was the head off and the gasket looked ok so sent the head for pressure test and was told it had a crack where the glow plug was stuck in the 2nd chamber, £350 for a full recon head and of i went to refit to the car, having done this and took the time to clean all the EGR and inlet valves i started the engine which runs a sweet as a nut, but still have the problem of the water going direct to the sump on start up, as soon as the engine is running you can see the water dropping in the header tank only to find the level rising on the dipstick, would you say that i have been sold a duff head or do you think this is a classic sign of a cracked or perfoated block, i am currently taking the head back off and having it tested somewhere else just to check, has anyone else come across this problem??? as anyone else seen these blocks crack or perforate???

The car is a 1999 2.2 sintra with just under 100,000 miles and it has never put a foot wrong in the 4 yrs i have had it. would i be right in saying a 2.2 diesel engine from a fronty woud fit straight in to the sintra using all my mounts and ancillaries

Reason: amended title and moved, not a Frontera.

Can't help with the fitting of a Fronty to a sintra, but I can tell you that the X22 Fronty lumps are very reliable and most certainly do not suffer from the issues you describe.

I have heard the same thing said from Vauxhall technicians that they have never heard of the x22 block cracking or perforating at all, let alone with such low mileage and age, Does make you wonder about the recon head though, cant think of any other way that water would get into the block at such an alarmingg rate though.

hi mate it could be the gasket on the front timing cover as it form part of the water jacket behind the water pump which would give you the the same problem i had as i took my truck to a garage to have timing chains done but they forced the cover back on without dropping sump and damaged headgasket causing water to run straight into sump.hope this helps
