I'm organising an overland trip next year with err in doors.
We are looking to travel through France and spend some time with some friends who have just brought a camp site then meet up with friends and do some off roading in the alps before traveling down to Spain through Andorra again off road and meeting up with a Spanish4x4 club.

The thing is my shorty in not big enough or comfortable enough to travel those sort of distances and still remain married, so I have been looking at diesel Discovery's.

I thought things were going well until err in doors said you are not having another car so either the Fronty, ML or WRX must go, horrible decision to have to make.
Will I still be welcome to turn up to some of the FOG laning trips in a Disco, that is the question.

Id rather do long distance in a troop than a disco bud, loads more comfy and not quite as tractor like as a green oval!

When the pump died on he Dti I made my mind up I was having a 300TDi Disco. I spent a couple of months looking and driving all over the country going to see ' immaculate, excellent condition, solid' Disco's which without exception turned out to be complete dogs! The majority had a major case of the tin worm, and the ones that didn't had major mechanical issues. Including someone who described theirs as 'perfect' with bathroom sealant trying to stop an oil leak from the head

In the end I gave up and bought a Trooper 3.1. Bombproof engine, huge inside (Mahoosive boot!) and every bit as capable as a Fronty off road. The LSD was a nice bonus as well. Downsides are that it is not a streetracer. The Dti was certainly nippier and slightly more economical and was more 'car like' in the corners. But that said the Trooper still handles better than a Disco. If you aren't in a rush on your road trip the Troop will happily sit at 75-80 all day long in comfort without deafening you.


The bottom line is whatever you drive you are welcome on FOG or at FOG events. Remember you are the member of the forum , not what you drive!
