How does the 4x4 work? HELPHi as this is my first 4x4 'm not sure if working the 4x4 right or not, I've done everything I was told put car in nutral then put in 4H then 1st went to pull away (on flat tarmach) and seemed to put out of 4x4 so had to reverse to put back in 2wd. Tried 4L on a hill and seemed fine. I've been told if I'm not on a slippy surface the 4x4 won't work as will just jump out is this true or have I brought a donkey

Re: How does the 4x4 work? HELPFirst of all mate, fill in your profile with your vehicles details so you can receive all the help you require.
Fronteras should not be driven in 4wd on tarmac, only on soft ground like mud or snow. The whaeels must be allowed to skid. There is a thread on here explaining it all, but someone will be on to give you the link. You will cause severe damage due to transmission wind up if you continue to drive on normal terrain. Once your model etc has been listed on your profile, you will get some help. Regards, Keith.

Re: How does the 4x4 work? HELPIf your brake warning light is coming on when the handbrake is off you should check your brake fluid level as the light doubles as a handbrake "on" warning and also to advise if the brake fluid level is dropping. I don't think the two functions have separate warning lights.

Re: How does the 4x4 work? HELPas well i would go for the brake fluid check, as on my A it doesn't come on when the hand brake is on, only if the brake fluid is low
and as for the 4wd system, the only way i would say to check is to jack up 2 wheels(one front one rear) and as long as you dont have an lsd or a welded diff put it into 4wd to see if the front wheel goes round, after you have done this remember to reverse it to unlock the hubs, unless you have manual locking hubs, hope this helps CARTREK
