1997 2.2 16v lwb

Postby amphibianalf on Tue Sep 06, 2011 2:28 pm

hi all .. I've got a 97 2.2 16v that i have owned for 10 years ..
its been off the road for a year and i just never got round to sorting the cylinder head.. it needs 4 new valves after the water pump went and the nice man from the RAC tried to restart it with no cam belt on it ...DOH!!!..
i started to sort it and fitted the new pump and belt and did a compression test and found the valves, so now the head is in the boot stripped down ready to go to the engineers..
anyway i got asked the other day if i wanna scrap it and the bloke offered me cash to take it there and then ..
so now i dunno what to do should i scrap it or repair it ...
if i do the head and the other couple of jobs that need doing and get it MOT'd i'm looking at spending around £250 only to sell it as a runner for a couple of hundred quid more the its scrap price ..or shall i just bite the bullet and scrap it...
of course if anyone on here is interested in it for spares and offer me what the scrapper offered and you can transport it, its yours ..
oh, i think in the time it took me to compose this post i just answered my own question... :oh yer: . :wall: . :hang: .i hate it when that happens i could have just put a quick note in the for sale section ....
anyway any ideas i need wisdom and guidance

...CHEERZ ALL ...AL
i play golf, kitesurfing and scuba, i'm not very good at 2 of them, thank god its not scuba....

6 of one, half a dozen of the other.......if you have had it 10 years you must know it inside out and everything that has been done to it.on that note i would do it and keep it.you know the belt has been done and water pump etc,so things you wont have to worry about for a while.you could buy another motor and same thing happen.........

on the other hand if you have another motor and dont want this one then you may as well let it go.........

personally,if i had it 10 years i would do it and keep, but at end of day its up to you !

my 2ps worth !

let us know what you decide !

Tend to agree, you know the motor, you know what has ben done and what will need doing, you know its reliability. I would repair it and keep it. For the £££ your looking at spening to get it serviceble again you could by another and it could be wrecker, may look nice and was ok at the time but turn into a bodgeit to get rid and cost more to keep it.

Repair it and keep it.

hi all and cheerz ..
ya see this is the problem i'm facing a few hundred miles before she went off the road i fitted a new rad, new discs and pads all round a new exhaust and manifold, (she had a crack) rear springs and dampers she has 5 very good tyres a new battery and was very reliable ...
all i need to do is get a head rebuild kit or 2 inlet and 2 exhaust valves and guides replaced by the engineers..and replace all the ball joints and front dampers for the MOT and i have my beloved fronty back ...which would be good coz its a squeeze to get my fishing gear in my pug 206...
on a diffo note does any other vauxhall use the X22XE lump that i might find in the breakers coz as soon as i say frontera they say their like rocking horse s##t...
i dunno what to do if i get rid of fronty i still need to get something else for my hobbies kit... anyone got a cylinder head lying around ???
i wanna make up my mind by the weekend ...

thanks for your comments so far .....AL....

I'm registering another vote for keeping your motor, hehe...
Balljoints and front shocks are cheap enough, and if the head is not damaged beyond what you mention regarding the 4 valves, it won't be too bad a fix. You could take the opportunity to clean out the coolant system in the block too while the head is off.

As for your other question, the X22XE is also to be found in the 2.2 Sintra but with a different sump; Don't know what engine is in the 2.2l Vectra but might be worth looking into?? Another option may be the Omega 2.2l engine, again I'm not sure 100%, but a quick trawl of the forum might help.

I was just trying to remember what engine the folks had in thiers, it was either the x22xe or the x22se, we replaced the complete lump and should have the old lump somewhere, the cam belt snapped but the head is fine, the oil pump was damaged in knacked the bottom end. Dont know f the heads are the same though. A quick ebay search suggests that the y22se and x20se may share very similar parts. My be even a completely different manufacturer i remembe us needed a head for my mums pug 505d and couldnt get one for pooh, then we found the ford granada shared the same head albeit a different block.
