I had hoped i'd get over to Kent for at least a few hours this weekend but I just don't think it's going to happen now. had a great weekend.
got there at 9 on friday and started to drink, and i even won a off ross as he bet me one if i could put my tent up with in an hour

then saturday i left my fronty at the camp site since i only have rwd and went out with greg in the GBL and wile we was out i had greg dive over my lap and then out of the passenger door,

other then that i had a seat in the rangerover and we nearly rolled that (pete has a vid)

then had another few 's on sat, went to bed at 3am and then today just as i was getting out of my tent greg puts on some nice wake up music

then i left at about 3pm this afternoon and got home at 6.30. so now relaxing and having a few more

Another great weekender out in the woods but wow was it muddy.
only got stuck once on a down slope in the rain. so left it there for about 1 hour until the rain stopped.
the only bit of carnage was later on on the same slope but up hill this time. casualty was O/S rear window.

To clear up the mystery of the door in blue/grey...Our B has got a dented rear door on the N/s...but Vauxsqueeks is the same colour other than his freakishly had a damaged NS front door when he arrived at the woods...almost identical damage too!...But A/t's + rain + hail + muchos mud + trees meant that he slid against a tree, but with some skillfull driving managed to inflict damage only to the already damaged panel.

Anyway...just finished unloading the trucks and washing them, (not the 2.4 though)...

Absolutely blinding weekend, thanks so much to everyone who came, helped, participated and made it fantastic....

Will do a proper post in a bit, but huge thanks everyone....it was wicked!!!

Firstly thanks to Greg and Sal for a blinding weekend, enjoyed every second of it, even though I was mocked mercilessly about my upside down boat ice cream van (beat you to it Greg, and you didn't complain at the ice cream Twister I got you, even though it gave you brain freeze ha ha ha ha)

Cheers to everyone else for turning up and making Mrs RatCav welcome ... especially the crooning Bromancer's Steve and Kel who provided her with plenty of "entertainment" saturday night with their serenading and dancing

Thank you to Greg for allwing me to try one of his 33's on 10J rims to judge fitment ... its now a definative plan but on 8J's

Ross tough break about the waterpipe, but the scene of steam and smoke billowing through the woods with gunfire in the background really got my imagination going and painted a scene from WWII!

Vauxsqueeks great to see you again and remember split the track rod and undo the bolts of the lower ball joint next time ... far quicker and easier than splitting ball joints (ask a lazy man to do a job and he will work out an easier way )

Rob it was great to see you and somehow looking forward to watching the video of me crunching my side step.

Dan watching your B series trundling around on dumpers was hilarious though glad you could make it.

I have to admit I was very impressed with both the way the woods are layed out and having something for everyone. Greg and his team have put a lot of time and effort into it. I was really concerned with taking Banshee out there after seeing some of the carnage that has been inflicted on some trucks. However after bimbling around in other peoples trucks and Greg pointing out the various obstacles and how to tackle them I eventually took the plung. Banshee is a bog standard 21 year old Trooper from factory with only a 2" suspension lift and 31" A/T's. Ok she sports manual hubs and rear LSD but nothing compared to other vehicles. I took her up the more gentle route to the top which still involved some careful manouvering and this degree of terrain was new to the both of us. We comforting words to each other ... well I did and she responded with the familiar rattle of a 2.8 and we went for it. Following Kel and Hipo went for a drive. First part a twsty slidey route to the hill climb. I sat for a little while waiting for Hipo to leave my exit point and gunned her. She roared up the hill and proceeded to trundle around the woods without a care in the world taking everything I was prepared to throw at her. She could of taken far more but my inexperience and to be honest lack of commitment held her back. I came back down after a good 30 mins of driving with the biggest grin on my face ... I am well and truely hooked now

Can only reiterate all the thanks that Neil has already made. It was a fab weekend. Thanks to everyone for taking to Harvey, he was quite well behaved, I hope. Thanks to Greg and Sally for letting him come along, and furnishing him with his bed etc, they were perfect.

This weekender was special, our 2yr anniversary of when we first all met up in the overgrown woods...a massive amount of working together has created a unique place where we can kick back and have fun, and become great friends at the same time...

Well done everyone and a huge thankyou, these last 2 years have been brill fun and its been great getting to know you all...

Was great to see Neal again, in the Trooper Lotus edition, with a caravan complete with waterfeature in tow..and this time he came accompanied by Mrs Ratcav, Chloe who had made a fantastic 2nd birthday cake for the woods posse, in the form (but straighter) of the Li'll white Leafer (RIP)...
It was brill and was delicious and was a great surprise...Thanks again.
Great to see the trooper venture out when it had dryed out a bit and glad you enjoyed the trails that we took yourself, Vauxsqeeks and Hipo round...
The trooper did well, cunningly navigated by Neal and the hi-cube top didnt prove a hinderence (apart from the owls falling over that where nesting in the upper rafters).
Cheers for your help up the workshop when the race against the clock diff lockup took place when the BGL spat some teeth (11 wasnt it??) Hope you enjoyed the "mission in the dark" in the BGL, the old girl did well on knackered muds and I think defied the laws of physics and logic plenty of times...the locked front helping no end. Thanks also for the help clearing up and shunting cars, and being a good sport with the jesting about your trooper.

What can I say...Matt came down in his shorty with nearly 5 different size tyres on it! Kept us amused all weekend with his ability to overcomplicate even the simplest of things! Your a good sport though bud, and we had some laughs...We shared a "moment" in the BGL coming down the newly dug axle twister on the "under the tree" climb...we got some big air, and got out to take pics, the car was point nose down at about 45degrees and over to the left about 45degrees...I climbed back up onto the drivers door sill, and tried to climb back in but my hand slipped on the seat and I slid head first straight down through the car, accross Matts lap and out of his open door, face first into the mud...much to his amusement and Stevey 2stuck who was waiting behind watching!...One I will never live down I guess! Cheers for your help setting up the Fronty scalextrics set mate...Hope you get 4wd again soon and a full set of tyres LOL...so can go play next time...

Kel came down with Chelsea (his daughter) and one of her friends...in his trusty 2.8td bug attracter...Gotta say Kel you demonstrated some great driving in the conditions and shared his knowledge of the woods with the more newbies when he chaperoned them round in difficult conditions. Had some great laughs friday and saturday nights, classic...although I still struggle to understand why you and Steve could not just "get a room" when his collapsable apartment block had so many to choose from!LOL. You and Ste had everyone in stitches all night mate...absolute classic (has Chelsea put YOU up for adoption yet though???)
Cheers for 2yrs of laughter and friendship bud..you been there from the start with the rest of us loons!


Andytats and son...

Andys 2.2 LWB A was sporting new boots, of the insa special track variety and boy did he do well...The sight of the 2 burgandy lwbs fighting the elements was a testiment to the capability of their drivers, the trucks and the simex styley tyres...Andy got stuck up at the top of one of the hills as a monsoon came down upon us, complete with hail!...I backed up as near as I could get (no where near though) and Andy and his lad abandoned ship to the BGL and we retreated back to the clearing...His truck was recovered a couple of hours later by Retropete who had to winch himself into a position to be able to extract Andy and a load of helpers.. it was that slippy...Great to see Andy having fun with his truck after having some hassles with it earlier this year, your hard work has paid off and you have turned your truck into a beast!


Random Ross

Rossco arrived early to assist with set up and deliver me another 2.0i sport to inflict my evil ways on and helped get loaded up and the gear down to the woods and set up...Massive help as always mate, and a constant source of side splitting amusement all weekend...His trusty 2.4i did its thing as always with Ross coercing it around..final its decided to burst some hoses ( it has been threatening to since we have known Ross!)...and that sidelined it as the hose that was believed to be at fault was actually ok, and a replacement wombled from my workshop didnt actually solve the problem...Ross carried out a truely redneck repair to stop the hose chaffing by duct taping the sole of one of his trainers around the pipe...quality...my student is learning well...LOL
With the wrong hose replaced the on board irrigation system was working overtime which side lined the truck for the remainder of Sunday...We dragged it with the 2.8lwb up to the workshop on monday morning (and pebbledashed the front in mud, and roadstone off the farm track) and effected a better repair once the front end was stripped out and the offending hose (water pump to heater supply pipe) could be identified and swapped out..Had a laugh doing it though, will dan and his mate providing morale support whilst Sally ridiculed us...last heard that Rossco made it down to Ashford ok, so fingers crossed is job-jobbed...Big thanks again for all your help Ross, first to get there and last to leave and a blast all weekend...


Wilberforce

Jim left the LWb at home and arrived in a ford fucus..LOL...Helped with the set-up and did a whole load of cooking for everyone over the weekend and helped with the teardown at the end...
His shorty has had some "fettling" by the twisted me since Jim last saw/drove it...now sporting a welded front diff to complement the already locked rear!...
This with the trucks lift and a set of special traks was gonna make this li'll 2.8 a force to be reckoned with....Jim kept us all waiting before unleashing it on the mud, and it was awesome...I watched it drive straight up and out of the "under the tree" climb, without it breaking even a sweat, when I couldnt even get 1/2 way up it using B-I-G and headlights on for an extra 7bhp! proper impressive stuff, until fun was ended with 2 punctures!
Great to Jim again, as he's missed the last couple of meets...will get the tyres rednecked for you bud..Jim has gone the whole 2yr stretch with the mad massive being there for the first meet we sorted up here...welldone and thanks Jim...


Retro Pedro

Pete came down Saturday morning in his trusty 2.8 shorty and stayed Saturday night for some bevvies...
Great to see Pete as always but evens his beast of a truck was struggling in the mud, and clutch was getting iffy...Fantastic effort recovering Andy from the most impossible place in impossible conditions shortly after the monsoon. His winch was deffo the tool of neccesity this day! will speak soon and set a date to get your truck into the redneck repair centre...
Pete as always had a stream of "willing" victims in his passenger seat to show our creations to and the lines to take...
Another member that was here for our first meet 2 yrs ago, in a standard truck and a newbie to offroading...Pete and his truck, and the site have all come a long long way...but hell its been fun! Cheers Pete...


Mapracing

Paul arrived Saturday morning for the day in his L200, as sadly his sport has decided to dump all its rear diff oil on his drive...and wasnt there to play.
Great to see you though bud, shame you couldnt stay over and see your wingman being a "spectacle"...LOL
Need to get my finger out with the HD diff covers, no excuses then!


2much and son...

Stevey 2stuck and his lad came down on friday evening to construct their "tent"...if you can call it a tent, we needed to apply for planning permission for it in advance and have the ground bore hole surveyed to ensure it would support it.
Steve returned Saturday for much playing with his new locked front end...and they did well!
HOWEVER...Ste's truck is fitted with a weather inducement system, such that whenever he lowers the new soft-top he fitted, the weather turns abruptly and the heavens open!...It was classic, Ste was stuck in the far bottom hole and the heavens opened, rain and hail, everything filling up his truck...
He's fitted the truck with a snorkel, but didnt have any for the occupants so a mad panic ensued trying to fit the hood while the truck was in the bottom of a very muddy hole! But all credit to Ste, he managed to get it out of the hole, somehow, even though the weather tryed to do everything possible to make this impossible!..Gotta say on the new stuff, you really got to see just how flextastic the rear end on Ste's shorty is, its awesome...but does make some disconcerning noises as the springs dislocate and then relocate...but pukka mods though Ste, well impressed.
This admiration promptly turned to astonishment as the alcomohol flowed later and it became apparent that both Ste and Kel (one of whom was clearly in season) had been keeping secrets from us all, and they had us all rolling around in hysterics as they "courted" in a musically synchronised fashion!
Big thanks for all the cooking fella...your a star (albiet an hilariously strange one at times!)

Came down on Friday in convoy with Jimbo and met us up the workshop...A newbie to our brand of crazyness in the woods and CC did some fab cooking, thanks, (was hot though LOL)...Nice to meet you and my new buddy Harvey...he's lovely and slobber free!!...Seriously he's a lovely dog and seemed to know me from the other end of the clearing by the end of the weekend as one of his "soft-touches" for some fuss and grub!
Glad you both enjoyed your weekend, the weather could have been better but hell it was a laugh though no matter.

Another newbie to our Antics in the woods was John and his lad....Great to meet you fella and thanks for coming down.
Congrats on semi succesfully assembling the trailer tent, and well done for braving the woods when it dryed out a bit on Sunday...
You did well and succeeded in making me walk further than I ever have since I started driving when we showed you, Dan and Neal round some "achievable on A/ts in the wet" trails...Good commitment and confidence is what its all about, and you guys surprised a lot of peeps as to just how well more "standard" cars can do in the wet...

Ps Sally said "no" to swapping doors, unless you want to swap NSR one...rotten aint she...i got a horrible feeling that she's taking to the B!

A last minute thing, but Dan and his mate came down to join in the madness in his Dti...Sensibly Dan decided against venturing out on saturday afternoon cos it was so wet, but did his fing in the B on sunday. Swapped over his a/ts for fudges dumper tyres up the workshop when the 2.4i got an emergency diff rednecking, and then he was unstoppable, having traction like never before and was going everywhere. hope you enjoyed the mad one in the dark in the BGL, was fun albiet challenging! Cheers for towing the caravan out of the woods and staying for clearup (although you slept through most of it!) and discovering that dumpers dont grip like a/t's on the road! lol...


Louis

The die-laughing of Louis was there in force finding new trees to get personal with...d'oh...tailgate is unique now! He not very well poor sod, but didnt want to miss the mudfest so came down suffering a bit...


Lloyd

In the strangerover that refuses to die, with its lovely burbling v8...bent the steering arm that he managed to repair by straightening and reinforcing, but sadly a bent drag link spelt end of play for it for sunday, so Lloyd joined his brother in the daihatsu...


Matt and Abbie

came down with their new sproglet...and introduced their baby to mud and madness...congrats guys


Darren and William

My mate Dazz and his lad came down on Saturday for a couple of hours as they have never been offroading before...they both loved it and asked me to thank everyone for being so friendly and welcoming...Thanks everyone...
Dazz is now on the lookout for a fronty....he nearly bought my BGL 6 months ago, doesnt seem so keen now though!!! LOL


Sally

As always Sally ran the base camp, kept me in line and commuted between Roma at home and the woods. Discovered early on that the road tyres on the B aint no match for the thick goo as you came into the bottom of the woods, and had my heart miss a beat as it didnt turn when she did!
She worked her socks off all weekend from set-up till the end of rip-down and then ridiculed us as we repaired Roscos truck up the workshop...
Sally was sporting her new RIGGER boots, kinda like my Minime, only she doesnt sleep in them...LOL
Big big thanks Sally...none of this would be possible with out you



Me

Had a cracking weekend...The 2.4i had a kinda makeover prior to weekend, now sporting round headlights instead of broken ones, airbrushed toxic green flames down her flanks, airbrushed tailgate, candy green fade bonnet and cable tied exhaust pipe. And it did well until I spat a few more teeth off the front diff, but there is no such thing as failure in redneck engineering, just an opportunity to effect a mod, so the front diff was sorted in about an hour with some helpers! cheers guys..Worked a treat though as some of you found out who foolishly ventured into the beast!...Took Ratcav and hipo out in the pitch dark, which is really challenging even if you know the woods really well, as its so easy to get lost, and everything is so much more difficult to judge...
We went down the rabbit warren run, which we undercut with the digger so its near verticle which was interesting, and used reverse gear forward decents a few times as the knackered dirtdevils cant find enough traction for a normal engine braked decent...ends up as toboggan run otherwise...
Got some big air down the axle twister under the tree which was fun...
Tryed the over the tree obstable going up, the one just off the stump garden hill (was a bit ambitious perhaps)...the car slewed at the last minute and we clipped the tree which stopped us and kinda beached us on top. we still had reverse drive so I managed to shuffle it off and then kinda wiggle it sideways out of the entrance track back onto the stump garden hill so we could carry on...Much use of rwd to slide the rear down and other shananigans to self extract it.
Was good fun, challenging, but good fun nethertheless and my victims/passengers seemed to approve...

Always great to see new faces as well as the regular rabble, and this weekend was no exception with Mrs Ratcav, CC and Vauxsqeeks joining our madness and fun...
A real big SE welcome and glad that you enjoyed yourselves, and come again soon.

The weather wasnt quite what we hoped for, but the weekend was still brill, great company, raging bonfire, good grub, booze a plenty.....oh and 4x4's and mud during the day (or night for those who are proper mad!)...

This weekender was a special one, as a landmark in us meeting a great bunch of people, who have been willing to give their time, hardwork, money and commitment to make something that we and everyone else can enjoy..
In the process of 2 yrs grafting and playing, we have made great friends and have created a great place to do our thing...

Well done everyone, you dont know how happy it makes us to see you guys enjoying something so much that we all have worked so hard on...

Saturday...and the fun started...

Ross modelling his mud brown "fade" on the front of his trusty 2.4i...this was just the undercoat though, there was lots more brown stuff to come!


Stevey 2stuck (who didnt actually get stuck so maybe a rename would be apt at sometime...next year) in the flextastic snot green locked up front pram-top, followed us to explore and compact some new creations that we had made since the last meet...Fudge was riding shotgun in the 2.4i with me...
The axle twister under the trees is kinda interesting coming down and made for some big air in the BGL.
Fudge is pictured here pointing out his confusion as the BGL has 4 tyres the same size on it...


And from up the hill...we werent stuck just posing for a chassis inspection...When climbing back in, my land slipped on the seat and I slid head first down through the car, across Fudges lap and straight out of his open door and face first into the mud...much to everyone watchings amusement


Next to try the axle twister was Ste in the flextastic shorty, which was sporting a fetching pair of orange braces for the occasion, and had its "rain making device" in the active position....grrrrr!
But oh no...it looks like the rear axle has fallen off!!!


This flextastic creation of Steve's flexes so much it looks broken, but its just doing its thing and with some unique sounds as the springs reseat it just flexes over and over...this thing is amazing...compare this to my 2.4 pics above, i think this was the same hole we were in...Ste's car still had a four boots on the deck, whilst mine had a rear so far in the air that fudge could have fitted a really odd size tyre to satisfy his fettish without even bending over!

Rosco and I showed Vauxsqueeks some trails and the lines to take that were doable on A/t's in the wetness that Stevey2stuck has bought down upon us...
John and his truck did really well, showing great commitment on the bits that needed some gas and glovebox brain placement, and got round loads of the trails...was later followed by HipoDan and Ratcav as we explored the less muddy trails...Rossco and I walked miles!...and then when we finally ended up back down in the clearing for a well earned brew, I realised I had forgot the BGL...and had to walk back up the top to retrieve it!




Gotta say the B's, and the Trooper did really really well on A/T's, some excellent driving...hipo has now mastered the B series shuffle, John has learnt that low box helps keep the clutch cooler, and Neal that height needs to be considered, but isnt a hinderence in the taller isuzu...
Well done guys, hopefully it will be dryer next time and we can get you out on the hills...

as ever a fantastic weekend

thank you to everyone for making this a fitting event to mark the anniversary of the woods. i think the real thing that brought home how much not only the woods have changed but so have we - no way would the majority of us have ever considered some of the "driving" we now do compared to the first few visits (well greg excepted obviously) and whilst the trucks have changed for the better we certainly have loads more panel "mods". this included a new shape bonnet for me, well it was a choice of sliding sideways down the hill and risk rolling or plant it into a tree as a very effective brake. locked front end did the business - virtually unstoppable

with Ross not living up to his usual levels of drinking thought it was better that i stepped up to the challenge, not sure the dancing was up to much but wellies do restrict the style

as per usual no photos from me, although a little closer to getting some as i actually borrowed a camera and left it in the glove box for the 2 days

biggest shame was no one being able to capture the GBS (greased baby seal) greg, sliding in one door, collecting fudge before sliding out the other door - priceless.

good to spend time with ya'll both new and old down the woods.

As said earlier in the review, I'd like to add a very big thanks for the hard work Greg and Sal have put in to make these weekenders and picnic days possible. That thanks also extends to everybody that lent a hand in the setting up and packing away of all the gear required.
What a contrast between year one and year two. Last summers dry weather resulted in dusty conditions with all runs doable on road tyres during the summer months. What a difference for this year - after the dry spring period the conditions have changed to the extent that no uphill slopes being easily be conquered.
Good to see everybody again and also good to meet alot of peeps venturing to the woods for the first time having a taste of what's on offer down there. It was a shame the slippery conditions put the block on it for Saturday because some of the uphill climbs can get the adrenaline pumping. I was pleased to see that you were able to get a run out on the Sunday when the ground dried out a bit.

Gotta say Petes 2nd vid above is a wicked...shows the strangerover almost flopping onto its side...but then Jims beasty simply cruising through the same obstacle...amazing what difference the 2.8grunt though a full complement of welded diffs and some special tracks makes!!!
