Inside M25 diesel emission zone

Believe this subject was touched upon on here a few months back. But going on from that, one of the lads at work lives within the M25 zone (Bromley). Along with his dad, they run a 'V' reg Toyota Hilux 2.4 diesel pickup for their part time gardening business. He was telling me that they are facing a £3,000 bill to upgrade the emission clean up on the pickup - basically sounds like conversion job to install a particulate filter system. Goes without saying, the pickup is not worth having that sort of money spent on it so he's faced with no choice but to get shot.
What he was telling me is that new rules are coming in during January 2012 and if he want's to carry on running a diesel pickup, it's got to be newer than a 05 reg.
I'm sure it was discussed previously, but I'm wondering if our older diesel Fronty's are going to be affected. Are diesels tax classed as 'private use' going to be banded with those classed as 'commercial' being that it's an emission control restriction.

Short answer Pete is that not at the minute however this MAY change after 2012. There are loads of Landrover owners who are up in arms over it all and you'll see a huge influx of cheap Diesel Landrovers hitting the second hand market over the next year as desperate sellers within the Zone try to get shot of them before they start receiving heavy fines.

Chevybravafing will be a victim too....daft thing is if I fit a 350cu in chevy lump in it and change it to petrol then it will be fine...
I am sure that this would be more damaging than its 2.8 4jb1..

I have just had a look on the Land Rover owners forum and there may be a lack of definition of a light utility 4x4. It looks (my observation) like the "van" versions of LandRovers etc are what is meant where if a vehicles log book/V5 describes it as an "estate" that should infer a "car" so could leave many FOGgers alone.
Still subject to others interpretation though.

Difficult to call because according to the following site Transport for London if you tick the 'car' option it says if its a car or non diesel powered vehicle you need not worry.

However if its a 4x4 light utility vehicle and diesel powered you need to worry for the reasons you mentioned above.

Most 4x4's whether diesel or otherwise unless registered with or for a business are classified as PLG (Private, Light Goods). However, you CAN have a PLG registered vehicle insured as company car or for business use privately.

So my guess is it comes down to its V5 certificate. If PLG there is a good chance you will be exempt provided its not registered as a business vehicle.

Your Frontera will be fine as its a passenger vehicle ... but worth checking. The Transport Office website accepts Registration plate input to save margin of error.

The new regulations cover anything with a pick-up bed, and panels in the back for windows.

This topic was covered on the Isuzu forum quite a bit as some are estate cars, some are the same vehicle but are commercial versions with metal panels in the back instead of glass, and others are double cabs with a pickup bed in the back. It seems that all are affected apart from the estate versions.
