Hi all. Ive been wondering about this and I think there maybe a few of you on here may know the answer to this. Does anyone in the armed forces (RAF) who sit their driving test get catergory B+E on their licence when they pass their driving test through the armed forces (RAF) Many thanks in advance. Dave.

Haven't been in te paid forces but understood the instructors/examiners were to DoE qualification and were capable of authorising the categories onto the licences.

Depends on the vehicle you train on, but if you didnt have a licence when I joined (and needed one for your job) you started on Landrovers and worked up. Think the RE Drivers finished their basic driving course with a Class 3 HGV after about 6 weeks. I already had a licence so didnt do any driving courses until I got to my first unit, then it was a quick fam course on the landrover followed by a tracks course for the CVRT and 432. Did the HGV in 92 out in Holland, car to HGV Class 1 in a week. We had brand new x country capable Merc Tractor Trailer units to learn on, so new in fact we actually got to take the bubble wrap off the stuff in the cabs and 45ft trailors which were tricked out as mobile offices. The boss at the time blagged a place on the course and took out a pedestrian barrier with the trailer 3rd day of the course the gear inside the trailer hadnt even been 'unwrapped' Don't know what you get now (left in 2002) but I would think it's very much in line with civvie street these days. Don't forget that rather than just passing a test for a 'group' of vehicles, in the military you have to do a course (and test) for each vehicle you are going to drive (including varients) which is then put on your military driving licence.
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ) Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you....
