having passed vx stealers on way to work called in to get 2 ,5 litres of semi synthetic , quoted £67.44 , had to ask parts guy to double check and yip he's right, thats the price inc vat, told him to leave it for now. 2 days later called in to independant vx factors and got 10 litres for 33.60 inc vat , the exact same oil half the price , dick turpin without the mask springs to mind. lesson learned folks

Talking of hellfrauds oils, I asked them a few weeks ago what the differance was between their fully synth vauxhall oil and fully synth ford oil, they couldn't tell me other than they wouldn't advise putting "ford" oil in my astra. I bought the ford oil because it had £10 off. So, is there any harmfull differances then, I suspect not.

The biggest problem with own brand oil is the source it comes from.
Many independent oil producers (like the ones who make most "own brand" oils) often source their raw materials from the cheapest source. This means that there is often no consistence to the quality of own brand oils as the raw material this week may well come from a different oil field to last weeks batch.
It's well worth asking "Who makes your own brand oil?". If it's a major oil company (and they can prove it - ask for coshh sheets) then I'd buy it. If not, I'd avoid it like the plague.

Just because an oil says 10W40 on the pack doesn't mean it's the same as a different brand with 10W40 on it. It's a bit like Heinz and Tesco baked beans, just you shouldn't eat engine oil, or put baked beans in your engine, but you get the idea.

By the puzzled look on the assistants face, I'm surprised he didn't feature baked beans in his answer Its the lack of knowledge about what people sell that bugs me. I know they can't know everything, which makes it almost fun asking the questions

when i was transport manager at a couirer firm two years ago i had an account at vx and was getting a five gallon drum of synthetic for that price
