Modding My Fireblade

Postby MG Autos (Mark) on Sat Apr 02, 2011 8:35 pm

Well I bought this beasty last year while we still had snow on the ground.

Image

Got it sorted and finally MOT'd last week so thought now it's all road legal again, i'd start with the mods this weekend as I've kinda have Car & 4x4 overload the last few weeks and fancied working on somthing a bit different.
Been buying bits and peices for a Top Yoke / Street Fighter Conversion and as I now had the majority of the bits, here we go :D

Image
New Bits including a very nice set of renthal handle bars

Image
As the handle bars & top yoke look as standard.

Image
Removed Top Yoke & Bars. Ignition switch and Immobiliser are held in the Top Yoke with security bolts which are hidden in a recess so no room for mole grips or similar  Had to very carfully use an mix of drill & angle grinder to get these out.

Image
Image
Shiny New (well new to me) Top Yoke, risers and bars on.
Extended all the wiring loom where needed and replaced the standard clutch cable with a +7" item. Now it's all mocked up I know I now need to order some +10.5" Brake Lines.
By no means finished but for a first mock up made up of bits bought from all over the place I think it's a pretty good start and made a nice change from working on stuff with 4 wheels :D

No going to keep the fairing and just cut the screen down. Clearance is actually pretty good so don't need to take too much off the screen, just reshape it a bit :D

Unltimately I'd like to give it a single sided swingarm conversion and underseat exhaust similar to the set up on the moderm MV Augusta's then a decent paint job.

Maybe in another 5-10 yrs it will all be done

She asked me what I'd most like to do to her body...
Apparently "Identify it" is not the correct answer!

Looking good Mark. I love bikes myself, just not practical with a wife who refuses to get on the back of one that doesn't have an armchair on it (Goldwing / big Harley).

This was my Blade that I had a few years ago (quite a few years ago now thinking about it) She had a Harris pipe, K & N, jetted, ignition advancer. Quite quick in her day, faster than both mates' ZX9R's

I streetfightered a Bandit. Acerbis moto x twin headlight shroud, moto x bars, cut the sub frame and raised it up then fitted a ducati 916 single race seat, cut the exhaust can in half, removed all the inners then welded the end back on to the 6" can that was left, which was just behind the foot peg...It was quite loud to say the least... Then had the whole bike, engine included, sprayed matt black.

No worrys mate, thanks for making enquirys for me though :D

This will be a SSLOOOOOWWW project anyway as I'm only going to be doing bits & peices as and when I get my hands on bargain bits anyway.
Though I've now had my Braided Brake Lines made up and they should be winging their way over to me as we speak. 8) So should be able to get them on over the weekend and make a final fit then have a test ride.
Lines where only £45 in the end including the P&P which I don't think is a bad for a set of one off Braided Brake Lines.....

I used to work for an MV dealer and the pipes we did were usually exchange units, they were sent of to a company in italy that modded them to race spec. Would be hard to find tbh, what about 916 termigoni's or even the Benelli Tornado style?
I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

Lots of bikes have under seat zorsts these days, should be easy enough to source one off ebay etc. Kind of under-floor heating for your pillion

Got round to finishing it off over the weekend.

New brake lines all on and bled through, Screen trimmed down & re shaped. Took it upto Boxhill (localish bikers meet) on Monday and rode brilliantly, no more back or wrist ache and drew a fair bit of attention from other riders at Rykas 8)

Needs a little more tidying of wiring and some Bar End weights but all in all pretty happy with the results
