What miles is too many?

Postby Lenny1969 on Tue Mar 29, 2011 7:41 pm

Long time since i been here, but as i should be shortly returning to fronty ownership thought i'd pose a question.

How many miles on the clock before you said no, and walked away from a purchase?

Ive been looking at a couple of 2.5s with 120/130k on them, both have a part service history but at this kind of mileage i go with my instinct and ears.

Also a 2.3 with 120k on the clock.

So opinions on the diesel variants and what mileage you would still be happy with?

I would say that the 2.5 engine is capable of high mileages and is a great engine. Yes I am a bit bias, as I own one, but if you look through the different sections on this site, you wont find many major problems bigger than the head gasket.
So if you can find one that has a high mileage and has been looked after, then go for it.
All the different models have their own problems, and the 2.5 is no different.
But as far as mechanical engine reliability goes, these are good for it.
Regards, Keith.

My 2.8 has 145000 and had 141000ish when I bought it.
Runs excellent, loads of power, uses little to no oil and still returns around 35mpg.

Like Keith has said, the 2.5 is a good diesel too. Provided the engine has been looked after, I don't think either the 2.5 or 2.8 will be a problem with mileage on them, however any high mileage car will have other wear and tear problems other than the engine. I'd be more concerned with the overall condition of the car than the mileage the engine has done.
Traffic lights in London are just rough guidelines

What Badboy said.

My 2.8 had 140k on the clock when i got it back in June, it has now just gone past 163k (9 months) it's been pretty reliable as well apart from me killing the turbo, but I put that down to me dropping the truck while out laning, missing a couple of oil changes and putting some oil flush thru the engine the day before the turbo died (having since removed the sump I now know I didnt get all the contaminated oil out, in fact I would have left at least .5 ltr in there).

Like anything mechanical they wear, but so long as you keep on top of the maintenance these things will go on for years.
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ;) )

Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... 'O-no' the truck.

Owning a 2.8 is a hobby in it's self...
