dumb question

On frozen snow covered roads do you just put it into 4 wheel drive then you loose grip or can you leave it on if the road is covered. The frontera (1996 2.8tdi) is a beast in the snow compared my dads Navara.

Aberdaron in North Wales. main roads are ok, bit of slush in places. Back roads are like ice, snow another layer of ice. then snow.
