would this be slippery enough for 4x4

New to using selectable 4x4, having only driven permenent before buying my fronty. On pictures no 2 & 3 on this link - viewtopic.php?f=32&t=38452
Is it ok to put into 4x4 or is this not classed slippery enough? As these are what the roads aroung me are like at the moment. Also do you have to be completely stationery when selecting 4x4? As thats what ive been doing.

i would use 2wd, but have the privilege of just pressing the button on the dash if it gets to slippy or gets thicker

Looking at those two pictures, you wouldn't necessarily need to engage 4WD. With a sensitive foot and feel for your truck, you should be fine. Then again, the surface can change rather quickly, so it all depends on what the rest of the roads are look like.

With regards to changing from 2WD to 4WD - what year is your Fronty?? The "A"-Series has usually manual Hubs i.e. you will need to get out of the Truck to switch, whilst the "B"-Series can be engaged from the cabin via a push button

Meaning that you have to change the front Hubs manually - have a word with Drifty or any of the Senior Guys, they are pretty good in explaning how this works best.

Auto hubs will engage as soon as you select 4wd High (you need to be stopped or get good at changing at low speeds) and disengage when reverse a metre or two.

If your on very slushy roads that contain ice 4wd should be fine, if in doubt put one side of your truck out of the tarmac and into the slush at lower speeds and this will release any wind up.

I have driven most of this week in 2WD unless I get to compacted snow or a slope.

Too worried about wind up I guess, I just trust my judgement on how the truck is feeling beneath me on the roads and trust my tyres.

Hi.

I have a 1993 2.4 petrol with auto locking hubs. I put it into 4wd hi and go in reverse to lock the hubs for a metre
then when I go back to 2wd,I drive forward to unlock the hubs.

This is from my Vauxhall Frontera driver's manual:-

Automatic locking hubs:-
To lock the automatic free-wheeling front hubs into the drive position,stop the vehicle and
shift the transfer case lever to 4H or 4L or 2H. When the vehicle is started again the hubs will lock
automatically.

Note:-
Once the hubs have been locked,they will remain locked even if the transfer case shift lever is shifted
from 4H or 4L or 2H whilst the vehicle travels in the same direction. To unlock the hubs,stop the vehicle
and shift the transfer case lever to 2H,then drive the vehicle slowly in the opposite direction to which it had
previously been used for approximately one metre.

Note:-
When the vehicle is in 4H or 4L,hubs will temporarily free and re-engage when vehicle changes direction.
