HI,
I have just picked up a second Fronty, but there is a bit of an argument going on as to exactly what it is. I was under the impression that it was a "B" varient, but one of the guys at work says its a mark 3? is there anyway to tell exactly?

Its a 1999 'V' plate 2.2 petrol "Limited" version, the radio is mounted center of the dash, not low like the A and not High like the B, the rear light clusters seem to wrap around the body on either side. Ill post a pic or 2 in the coming days to be sure. It needs the head gasket doing and my Haynes manual only goes from 91- Sept 1998

Is it pretty much the same or are there some things I would need to know about this model engine before I start? or specific tools?

Hi, they made the A series and the B series.
Some people see the late A series facelift as a Mk2 and the B series as a mk3.
Fronty peeps just say A and B. Yours is a B series mate.

Yours is a B series.
There was the A series, which had a facelift around 1996. This is commonly mistaken to be the Mk.2. Is it known as the A series facelift model.
The B series was introduced in late 1998.

Haynes didn't produce a manual for the B series, but there is something on a CD which can be bought (or you could try to blag a copy from someone on here, but check the operating system on your PC is compatable) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-FRONTERA ... 3ca8af07e2

I'm sure that there is a copy available which runs on Vista, but as yet I've not found one which runs on Windows 7

Its a 2.2... and its head gaskets gone... (sounds all too familiar...)

Check the engine serial number, it is more than likely the X22XE or SE variant.



the serial number's first 5 digits are the engine code.

The X22XE block is 'covered' in the Haynes manual for the earlier frontera (up to 1998)

If you want a proper manual for the engine, have a look out for Daewoo / Isuzu manuals that cover the 2.2 16v petrol engine, theres a LOT more pictures and the instructions are easy to follow..

The only "specialist" tools NEEDED are a T55 Torx bit (Male) for the cylinder head bolts, torque wrench and a decent set of male / female Torx / Star drive sockets / spanners.

Highly recommended - but not essential.. Cam locking tool (borrowed one in the end, its a nightmare without one), Decent 1/2 breaker bar (about 24") with an angle guide for torquing the head back down, a bottle of tippex for witness marking everything, decent first aid kit and a big old swearbox...

Buying a head overhaul kit is more cost effective than buying the components separately, and they come complete with the head bolts. Also its worth changing the timing belt (& tensioner) while your there..
