What are the Benifits of

having an oil cooler

Was looking at an A series 2.2 petrol and noticed that it had an oil cooler fitted near the rad, after market fit or factory fit I'm not sure.
There isn't anything like it fitted to my B series that I can see so was wondering if there is any benefit to it and why VX
if they did fit at factory dropped it on the B series.

i have no idea why vx never fitted an oil cooler to the B series 2.2 petrol my old 2.2 A had one fitted but when i changed the engine for a 2lt omega engine i never refitted the cooler but never noticed any difference it never lost oil pressure or over heated

if you wanted to fit one to the B i think it should be easy enough to do if you can find a 2.2 A in the scrap yard rip off the bits the part that the pipes connect to under the oil filter just unscrews once you have removed the oil filter and fit them to your B series

i might still have the bit that goes under the oil filter i will get a picture of it later if you need it

I think it is down to modern synthetic oil technology,most now use heat exchangers to keep the oil & water at close to the same temperature & there is also the consideration that overly cold oil is not mechanically efficient so affects output,economy & emissions

I have no plans to fit one, I just wanted to try and understand why VX fitted them to the A series and not the B series
same as the MAF Sensor A series have one but the B series (petrol) don't.

I know i'm very to all this engine stuff, but I'm learning.

It`s symantics really the modern way does sometimes cool the oil but at others heats it,although it is actually still termed a cooler it is actually an exchanger by virtue of how it works .Most people if they were looking for a cooler would be looking for an air cooled radiator rather than a strange casting attached to the cylinder block,there is a similar arraingement on the 2.8 which even has it`s own seperate thermostat in the water pipe
