On a slippery surface use 4h first, if you find its slipping or not making progress drop to 4L.
When in 4wd drive/change gear as normal...DO NOT use 4wd on any hard surface (ie dry road)
Not sure, but I don't think your petrol 2.2 has EGR. People blank them off on diesels to prevent black smoke/missfires and general poor running problems.
What have I told you about Thinking Erroll??

2h is just your normal 2wd.
4wd low is really for getting up and down really steep slippy slopes. When going down a steep slope set it into 1st or 2nd in 4low and let it chug down gently without using the brakes thus maintaining grip and not carreering down in a slide with all wheels locked.
4wd high is for levelish ground in snow or mud or slippery grass or sand etc.
Hope that helps.
Try a pay & play and ask them to give you a few pointers. Once you've been round once it'll all make sense.
Then you'll want to go round again & again until the kids tell you its time to stop and take them home.
If you need something done quickly just ask a busy woman then get the f"k out of her way.

I wont answer the 4x4 related question as its been answered several time but I will answer the EGR question for ya:

The 2.2 does have an EGR valve.
It recirculates some of the exhaust gasses back into the combustion chamber where it reduces the quantity of nitrous oxides in the exhaust gas and reduces combustion chamber temperatures.

While this does lower emissions (Note: nitrous Oxides arent checked under current UK MOT emissions tests) it has an unfortunate side effect which is:

Soot particles from the exhaust gas leak past the rings and contaminate the engine oil.
As these same soot particles are passing through the inlet manifold they also coat the inlet valves and inlet manifold which can cause a loss of performance.
Exhaust valves will also clog sooner.

I blanked my EGR valve a few years ago (same model as yours) and while performance hasnt noticeably changed the engine oil does stay cleaner for longer and the spark plugs are much, much cleaner.
Another side effect is that it eliminates the EGR from causing future problems.

On your model you will need a new gasket. Cut a template from some sheet steel. 1mm thick or so will be sufficient. Drill 2 holes for the bolts.

layering from the bottom up is:

Gasket
Blanking plate
EGR valve.

Remember to replace the EGR valve connector otherwise it will throw up an ECU fault.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!
