Petrol Dangerous Goods.I now have my own gardening business.
The insurance people (Post Office) has told me that if I want to carry a can of petrol in the car I have to get special car insurance at £700!!! They say it counts as carrying dangerous goods. I still have my dangerous goods license (ADR)from my HGV days and I know 15L of petrol is way below the legal limit before you have to have warning notices and a ADR license. Anyone know the truth about there clam? Tiddles. What happens, happens. What doesn't happen is not meant to

Re: Petrol Dangerous Goods.I always thought that it all depended upon a certified container..5ltr being the most common and generally accepted one used, but then you have the bigger metal jerry can ones...
Could it be possible that the problem comes into play as the Tiddles has his own gardening business, so would possibly be on a business insurance policy? I'd dig my old highway code out, but since it's just over 21yrs old it might be slightly out of date... The greatest lesson in life is to know that even us idiots are right sometimes

Re: Petrol Dangerous Goods.Found this on another site does it help?????
The UK Dept of Transport Regulations state: Diesel: Diesel carried by private individuals is not regulated as regards how much may be carried and how. Anyone contemplating carrying diesel in a vehicle should bear in mind the potential for fire and the likelihood of spillage from inadequate containment. Petrol: Regulations made under the Petroleum (Consolidation) Act 1928 control the quantities of petrol permitted to be kept in containers for private use. This limit also applies to carriage. A maximum of two metal containers each up to 10 litres capacity, plus a maximum of two suitable and appropriately-marked plastic containers each up to five litres capacity, can be kept in a motor vehicle. For further information on portable petrol containers see HSE website Comments on Betsy here please!!! viewtopic.php?f=115&t=56282

Re: Petrol Dangerous Goods.Petrol - small scale carriage
ADR exempts completely private, non-work related carriage subject to some conditions (ADR 1.1.3.1(a)). Work related carriage may be exempt or partially exempt in three ways: Ancillary to main activity. ADR 1.1.3.1(c). This is a limited exemption which is discussed in Main Exemptions[1] Under the LQ provisions (see Main Exemptions[2]). Petrol is LQ4 and the relevant container size is 3 litres. plus you need to Carry 2 kg fire extinguisher if it was me i would store in steel gerry can and carry on trailer then put in van for storeage when on site also just say its for you in case you run out look here http://www.hse.gov.uk/cdg/manual/common ... petrol.htm

Re: Petrol Dangerous Goods. My brother works for AXA as an insurance fraud investigator and he tell me that it does not apply to insurance policies if the petrol is carried outside the vechile. ie in a trailer, only then are you restricted by the quantity the law states.
Maybe one way around it?
Re: Petrol Dangerous Goods.yes but if u read small print on insurance it clearly says cant be used for business use or to transport dangerous goods

Re: Petrol Dangerous Goods. He would still need a buissness policy however if carried in a trailer it is not carried in the vehicle and only becomes dangerous goods when its above the legal limit!

Re: Petrol Dangerous Goods.Confused now
So the AXA man is saying that it is only covered if it is inside the car, is that right? I am using a diesel van for the business so cant claim emergency use. What is strange is that they say it is perfectly ok for me to have all my tools full of petrol but I cant carry a can of petrol Tiddles. What happens, happens. What doesn't happen is not meant to
