Big Mans MPG testjust giving that new shell unleaded a go and seeing how it works on an everyday basis.
OK this is the way im doing it....not mega technical at all and more of seeing how far I can stretch the £20 top up a time. Petrol light illuminated. Add £20 fuel. Reset trip....drive until fuel light comes on. I do know that it is no way an exact science but its keeping me happy as I drive mainly at 2500 rpm in 5th. I only use my truck for work and sad as I am travel the same route day in day out so driving style and road should be consistant. £20 Total @114.9 ltr = 102 Miles £20 Shell @114.9ltr = In progress. Car - 1993 Sport 2.0 petrol. Current Milage circ 95k, serviced last month. Tyre pressure all at 32 psi. When I get the result of the Shell I have read up on adding acetone to the fuel. 2.5ml to 1 Ltr of petrol (1.5ml to litre of diesel) and see how that gets on. cheers bm
Re: Big Mans MPG testIve found adding some milners petrol additive did stretch the mpg, also the shell stuff helped. None made it more than break even though, just longer between stops.

Re: Big Mans MPG testIve used the acetone trick on my old flatbadge (shoehorned a 302ci V8 into it and it kept breaking) and for the MOT on Martha, works a treat.
I use 1ml per litre of fuel, it helps vapourisation of the fuel by lowering the surface tension and therefore you get a finer spray and a better / cleaner burn. Words of warning though.. 1) DO NOT use nail varnish remover - only use 100% Acetone (you can get it from a pharmacist) 2) It bu@@ers up plastics, turns them white, easiest way is to add x litres of fuel to your tank, then use a 1 litre bottle and mix the acetone with a bit if fuel (1 drop per litre) give it a shake then add to fuel. 3) There is apparently degradation caused to hoses etc, but in such minute quantities it is minimal. 4) Doesnt make any difference to fuel consumption, if it does its tiny, BUT the engine - both times - ran smoother and pulled a bit better. 5) AVGAS (aviation fuel - 94UL - High Octane) gives a much better burn - mix it 1 part AVGAS : 4 parts Pump fuel, find a friendly chap who works at a local airport who drinks in your local pub Have fun! John You cant polish a t*rd..
But you can roll it in glitter if its broken - fix it if it isnt - mod it!
Re: Big Mans MPG testI have been keeping a close eye on Monty now for a few months. Most of the driving I do is urban and I'm getting 24.1 mpg. Not bad for a V6

Re: Big Mans MPG testsourced the acetone and will use it as described jammywagonwheel (cheers) once i have posted the results of the shell fuel. Will be adding it to shell fuel i think.
oh and as above re average speed...... I drive at a smidgen under 2500rpm which in fifth equates to around 52mph on dual carridgeway on unrestricted roads, other speed limits are kept to with highest gear suitable. Cheers BM
Re: Big Mans MPG testShell @114.9 just done 119 miles
now have £20 of Shell with 2.5ml per ltr of acetone added. immediate impressions..... a lot smoother more responsive and slightly previoys irratic idle noticably better. cheers bm

Re: Big Mans MPG testCheers John, will cut back to 1.5ml per litre for the next text then down to 1.0ml after that to see how it goes.
Oh I mix it in a petrol can with approx 500 ml and funnel it in straight after refueling at the petrol stn

Re: Big Mans MPG testLOL i meat i mix the acetone up with half litre of petrol !
Yeah got my syringes as felt like a addict asking for them at the surgery!!! also gave me steri strips and cooking spoons !!! apparently they come in a pack! lol. Off to the pound shop later so will invest in a new funnel, and for some strange random reason i want a metal mess tin! Oh also while on subject of pound shop, the 151 red oxide and metal paint is really good stuff!! dont know if its been started but how about a value thread showing whats good at the good old pound shop. Will check my plugs after a couple of weeks kinda keen on using this stuff well until I have used up the rest of the litre I bought!! lol
Re: Big Mans MPG testohh-got me thinking.. just about to do a tip run (taken day off to get garden sorted out in peace & quiet) and theres a Poundland just opened in Fleet...
Theres a thread on here called 'National Bargain Corner' in "the lounge", theres loads of good bits in there, there was a toolbox from Argos, tow ropes in tesco's (51p)etc. Keep us posted on the Acetone, pretty sure it does bu@@er all for consumption, the engine runs a bit sweeter, and cleans up the engine a treat.. got a beer festival tomorrow South East Picnic Sunday... (Maidstone - Kent if your passing - see http://www.fronteraowners.co.uk/forums/viewforum.php?f=63) I'll see how Martha behaves with my "Secret ingredient" in the tank (AVGAS - Plane Fuel John You cant polish a t*rd..
