Got a question to ask, my mate got one S reg £250 12 months ticket and 2.9tdi Merc block.

Neither of us know a lot about them but working through most jobs, thing is tonight when driving it he accidently went down into second gear at about 25mph and the rear wheels screeched and locked up for a split second, any one know why this would happen, we where in 2wd, the 4wd seems very similar to the Frontera B series.

Could it just be engine braking locking up the rears?? has it got bald tyres????

Down change, third to second, the knob did it once by accident then again to see if it did it again I warned him of the damage he could cause, he looked sheepish
Tyres are great condition.

you say its a merc tdi but in fact its a merc designed and tooled tdi still built in korea or wherever by none merc people so build quality is nowhere near merc standards

Yes, all ancillaries are not Merc, the block is under licence from Merc, any further info on the problem would be good though

As Kel said some diesels engine brake more ( or are more reluctant to pick up speed quickly) and if you shift down to quick the rears will lock before the revs pick up...
Nothing to worry about I would say, and handy for "setting up" for corners!

I can tell you one thing if flippin well flies and is very smooth with it, the engine is huge though but well set out, oil filter at the top only the intercooler is in a very stupid vulnerable place low down behind a plastic bash guard waiting for any old rock to split it.

Yer it seems a torquey engine so could be the issue, just seemed strange the way it happened.

Well looks like the 4wd system is the next problem

me and a few blokes where i used to work used to do 5th to 3rd in our work transits at 70 (old di powered ones) and the rears used to lock and nearly stop the van instantly, great for emergancy stops, as said before it is cause the engines cant rev up quick enough and simply lock up
