Fronty gear box made out of proper hard cheese, not that philadelphia cheese that green 4x4s are made from. get a fronty, you'll love it. you'll be warm in the winter..hardly ever be in the garage getting your half shafts replaced, dry once you've gone through a puddle. and better off when you need tyo buy parts (think Omega, Saab, Izuzu, Cav.etc lots of crossover bit un bobs) it's just jealousy of the under-rated beast thats a frontera...plus there's us lot here
The greatest lesson in life is to know that even us idiots are right sometimes

Just 2 pence worth, buy the best you can find and don't worry about it being 2.5 or 2.8.
Being an owner of both a 2.5 and 2.8 I was impressed with how much more refined and lively the 2.5 feels compared to the 2.8. Nowt wrong with the gear boxes or axles on either of the diesels, 2.0 Sport front axles are not known for their strength tho.
Paul Higgi runs a 2.5 and his is a testament as to how rugged and reliable the 2.5's actually are, yes the No1 injector can go but not that it fails everyday and if you are worried just keep one in the boot
If you are going laning or water wading, the alternator is in a more sensible position on the 2.5 and is high enough up to stay out of trouble unlike the 2.8
The chances of finding a 2.5 in good nick are better as they are newer, have seen a few Opel badged 2.5's on V plates
But given the choice, I'd still go for another 2.8 out of preference
Soon to be without a Frontera after 10 years of owning one

Some good ideas here.I didn't know about plug in heaters and hadn't thought of carrying a spare no 1 in the boot. I have loved (and still do ) both my fronteras. The 2.5 is surprisingly quick off the mark and has a brilliant heater its warm in minutes and that made it a great vehicle to come back to after a cold day outside. Its doing 30mpg round town. You could of course buy one of each
