Stinky Air Con (non-fronty)

OK bear with me a little.

Problem is on the wife's 206..basically the Air Con works but has gone really stinky, she says it's like a musty damp smell..I say it's more of a ham sandwich smell. Since I've never owned a car with Air Con I'm assuming that it's just a case of getting it re-charged (or what every you call it)...regenerated?

Told her that it's beyond my capabilities and to phone around and get a quote. best one she got was about £49 from kwik fit...is this a decent price?

I'm taking it that it is just a case of replacing the gases in the system, and beyond a home repair..

Its down to the mold and fungus that grow on the evaporator. There are a couple of ways of dealing with it. There are aftermarket aerosols that you switch on and leave in the passenger compartment with the aircon on and the aire on recycle. They tend to have a limited effect and may clear the smell at 1st but the smell tends to come back quite quickly as the aerosol mist can't penetrate right through the evap. Or take it to a garage that has a machine, again there are different machines some produce ozone to kill the fungus and bacteria and others are a smoke based product, obviously the garage route will cost more but it will last longer.

The aerosols do work well and are a diy job...fit a new cabin filter at the same time...chances are its not been done

Thanks for the extra advise...another question..where would I find the Cabin filter? .....
It's going to be in the cabin aint it..and probably hidden inside the dashboard far away from human intervention..

(I have no idea about aircon..I just open the window and stick my head out like a dog if i get too hot)

Most cabin filters i have changed were up in the scuttle panel.Nice and easy job and not to expensive to buy one.My 406 had one and it was underneath a flap that lifted up in the scuttle panel.

excellent, nice easy job for sunday (for once)..just after the F1 and before the world cup final (yeah i know that england are out but I like it anyway)
