non frontera mechanical question pug 307borrowed the girlfriends car today and it drives like s##t.
Feels like the rear end it wobbling. ive checked the tyres and blown them all up to the right pressures. But the rear passenger tyre is totaly worn also a totaly different make and has cracked sidewalls. All other 3 tyres have good tred and are the same make. Shes only had the car 9 months and i think it a shed its a 2002 reg 307. has any one got any ides what will cause the rear wobble. bushes look ok with no movement. im slightly concerned that all the other tyres are the same and this one looks so worn and past use. thinking someboy wrecked an alloy at some point and replaced with another and maybe something is out of line. Will a four wheel alignment check show anything up. ?? The only boundry is your imagination.

Re: non frontera mechanical question pug 307yea any way of checking if the rear axle is bent or will they not be able to align the rear wheels if thats the case

Re: non frontera mechanical question pug 307Has the bald tyre got even wear accross the tread or is it worse on one side or the other ?
If it's had a rear impact it could well have bent either the hub or even the whole axle. This is the axle assembly used on most of the 307 range. ![]() They are not paticularly strong and even a fairly minor / low speed impact can knock them out of true. Might be worth getting under it with a tape measure and see if there's any differance from one side to the other or obvious signs of impact damage / metal fatigue. The good news is that if the axle is bent, they can be bought second hand from most breakers for £50 - £80. Bad news is they take 3-4 hours to swop over.
Re: non frontera mechanical question pug 307cheers yep tyre looks more worn on outside than inboard.
would the rear wheels really be out of alignment enough to cause a wobble. and my thought is something wrong as the interior carpets dont fit right and the driver air bag dont sit right i personally wouldnt have brought the car and want her to get rid before the mot in april. Re: non frontera mechanical question pug 307If the tyre is in that bad a condition it may have a carbuncle, jacc the car up spin the wheel & look at all angles for any "out of round",go for the easy ones first
Re: non frontera mechanical question pug 307simple things never thought of that. will trying the good spare be worth trying

Re: non frontera mechanical question pug 307cheers bud my mom had a 307 and it drove lovely borrowed it to go to london and didnt want to give it back. but the girlfriends car just feels wrong and a shunt or a good whack to the rear passenger wheel fits my thoughts rather her just get rig she wouldnt spend the money on havin it checked on a jig and the time and hassle of me ripping a rear axle off just wouldnt be worth it

Re: non frontera mechanical question pug 307The same set up is on the Mrs Picasso, they are notorious for breaking coils, also with a tyre with that much deterioration the side wall will have no stiffness and will be flexing like mad, I think they recommend changing tyre that are 6 years old no matter what the condition of them.

Re: non frontera mechanical question pug 307A rear bearing may have gone. That will put one rear wheel out of vertical alignment. Not uncommon on the beam axles fitted to pugs and a relatively common complaint on the 205/306/307 and various other pug models.
The mounting rubbers between the rear floorpan and axle may have deteriorated or even worse separated completely. Shock bushes are prone to wear and as suggested the beam itself could be bent. I had the joyful experience of replacing one on a 306, bought the bearings then realised it was beyond the scope of a home mechanic, tried getting quotes from a few garages and all refused and suggested a used replacement instead. Had to get 2 replacements as the first was bent almost imperceptibly but bent none the less and it handled awfully. Replacing the bearing is an expensive option as the bearing is a PIG to do and most independents will refuse the job and suggest a used replacement axle be fitted. Pugeot will charge around £500 to replace a bearing.
Re: non frontera mechanical question pug 307cheers trying to talk her in to getting rid.

Re: non frontera mechanical question pug 307Is there the possibility that its a 'cut n' shut'?
Check for mismatched paint and other tell tales such as globby welds where there shouldnt be, particularly in the boot area under the carpet and under the rear seats as well as removing the rubber door seals and checking the door seams. Only asking as you say the airbag doesnt look right. A shunt that has been repaired may have bent the chassis imperceptibly, but enough to throw the handling out. Whats the spare wheel like?
