Paul, I still reckon the bearing has gone, dont give up, get it checked as its the only part they didnt change and should have, when a gearbox goes they generally give you a bit of warning by whining and or crunching, rarely do they give up the ghost with a bang unless the are cooked rallying or something.

Hi,
Just got a call from the chap at the clutch centre.
He reckons it's the clutch but hasn't stripped it yet.
The DMF was replaced (along with the clutch) just 2 months back!

Going back to the original thread of this post........
Well, it does indeed look like the head gasket.
There is now no compression to start the engine!
I'm afraid what's going to have to happen is it's gonna get piled in for scrappage.
The wife's dad has kindly said he'll let us have the money for a new car.
I would guess that, even if I repaired it myself, it's going to need at least another head (the old one has previously been skimmed once before).
I would think I'm looking at, probably, £500 or so to repair.......
So, the plan will be to take off any parts that are better than on my diesel fronty (it had a new set of calipers not long back) swap them over, take out the brand new radiator and sell it off, swap over the headlights (mine have a couple of chips) take out the load cover and the radio.

I guess if it was running well i'd only get tops £800 or so for it anyway, so £2000 off the price of a new car is looking a better option.

Headgasket set and bits about £100 give or take. Head from above post £200. Own time and labour £Free.

It's already been skimmed once (when the head gasket went a couple of years back)
It's now got to the point of no return i think.......

Having second thoughts now.....
If (and it's a big if) I can get hold of a used head in good,useable,condition fairly cheaply, I might just give it a go.......
How long do you reckon It'll take?
I'm thinking probably a whole weekend?
I've changed cam belts and water pumps on it so I guess it's nothing TOO scary........
Also, just heard from the garage regarding the other Fronty..... the centre had ripped out of the clutch!
Fortunately no damage to anything else,the dmf is fine and the gearbox....... phew.
They reckon the clutch was a faulty part so I've asked them to keep it for me and I'll return it to the supplier........personally

Nice one Paul, glad it was just the clutch, had the same effect as a bearing go, hope you get the labour back from the manufacturer, but they may blame the garage that fitted it so would be worth taking their advise them play them off with each other as the manufacture will be questioning the garages skill at fitting it

At the very very least the parts should be covered.

hi paul you can have a head skimmed more than once but if its getting close to the valves they may have to be stripped out first before the skim your probably looking at £35ish for a skim & you can get a cheap gasket set including the bolts from here - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-2-2L-ECO ... 5185e2662a

My Frontera is back now with new clutch!
Really strange fault on the broken one!
NONE of the rivets have come away, in fact, to look at it you wouldn't know it was broken
The centre spline just... spins so I guess it's broken inside where you can't see.

That has got to be a manufacturing fault,did they just change the friction plate or fit a kit ?
