1st real off-road day in the FronteraYesterday I went to Mouldsworth Quarry for my 1st ever off-road day. I've messed around in fields before, but never done anything officially. Got there at about 11am with my mate and his fairly new (05 plate, recently polished Navara) and there were only another 4 vehicles there. Got a brief tour by the organiser showing us what we should be able to do, what we probably wouldn't and what we shouldn't consider attempting.
I was pleased the way the Frontera performed, although did get bogged down in mud a couple of times, depsite having BFG M/Ts on. The guys that dragged me out suggested I should get some taller tyres( 31") as I am only running 235/75/15s. Apart from the towbar catching a few time (I'll take it off before the next one), the only mechanical issue I had was the front right auto hub clicking loudly after a few hours. I'm guessing with the constant forward and backwards motion trying to get out of the mud, I may have damaged the spline. Is there an easy way of checking and what's it going to cost to mend if it is that? Few pics to follow in a few mins, although I'm sure you've all done similar.
Re: 1st real off-road day in the FronteraThe hub could be one of two things, cheap, the circlip likely to have fallen off, more expensive but not terminally bad
Hill and Ditch is a perfect site for beginners as your never out of sight of help. Ive been a couple of times and the red sand will take years to get rid off If you go through the hill and ditch site gallery somewhere in there are pictures of us a couple of years ago Ste

Re: 1st real off-road day in the FronteraI'm not planning on washing it - it looks more intimidating dirty.
I'll see if I can find someone local to look at the hub and see if its the clip or the cv then. I was expecting you to say a new hub was needed and they're only available from Germany, or something equally bad. Pics, as promised ... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
Re: 1st real off-road day in the FronteraReally easy to see if its the circlip, you dont even have to take the wheel off, just take the six bolts off the auto hub cover and have a look
If your not confident you can either pop down here to Kirkby Saturday and we can have a look for free or a mate of mine has a garage in Horwich and wont charge the earth and knows 4x4's very well. Re: 1st real off-road day in the FronteraThe dog loves it. She used to getting thrown around now, so a small hill like that is nothing for her.
