Nut splitter How do they work.Ok got a stuck nut and looking at nut splitters on ebay aka http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-SILVERLINE-2-PC-NUT-SPLITTER-SET_W0QQitemZ120520602320QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Hand_Tools_Equipment?hash=item1c0f9672d0
So stupid question time, do you just hit them with a hammer like a chisel, or is it a scew in version. Trev 2000 Frontera 2.2 DTi Ltd
Re: Nut splitter How do they work. These are screw in ones Trev....you wind the bolt back, put it over the offending nut and the wind the bolt in tight and that cuts the face of the nut...
Must admit if you are buying one, I would spend a bit more and get something a bit better than the silverline ones as the cheaper ones can break pretty easy... 4x4 stuff tends to be larger than most car stuff, and you are kind almost getting into the commercial tool stuff for a fronty if you want the tool to last... Saying that though, at that price if they do the job then is doesnt really matter how long they last... Check out the index thread below where pics/reviews from all our past meets can be found!!!!

Re: Nut splitter How do they work.Yep you just screw it up and then it should split the nut.
I used one last weekend
Re: Nut splitter How do they work.Ring goes round the nut then screw it up and a blade comes in from one side and pushes it onto static blade and cuts it in two halves.
There are two kinds. The basic mechanical ones and the hydraulic ones. Hydraulic is better but works in the same way as mechanical only instead of you screwing a bolt onto a flat blade base, you are screwing a small hydraulic piston which pumps fluid through to a wee ram so no direct friction therefore more force for less effort but more turns. I think that makes sense. If you need something done quickly just ask a busy woman then get the f"k out of her way.
Re: Nut splitter How do they work.Hi Trev,
Like Greg says, I'd avoid Silverline. It's cheap and nasty, and almost certian to break. I'd go for something like this http://www.cromwell.co.uk/KEN5034220K as it has a lifetime guarantee. If your interested in it, PM me you want a better price Traffic lights in London are just rough guidelines
Re: Nut splitter How do they work.from my days "on the tools" i would say that unless access is a real problem, use a nice and sharp cold chisel to split the nut rather than a splitter as most require a huge amount of effort and cast bodies do split. mind you if you do have access than a suitably sized pair of stilsons will normally turn the nut - but beware if doing this that it can also shear the bolt.
what are you trying to remove? if you have any pics might give a better idea and if there is anything i can borrow tool wise from work that would help i'll see what i can do. ste
Re: Nut splitter How do they work. Its the exhaust fanimold nuts. The lower one, second in from the front.
Difficult to get at and just starting to round off. Will try to hammer on a smaller socket first then its tiem for the splitter. Trev 2000 Frontera 2.2 DTi Ltd

Re: Nut splitter How do they work.hiya trev,
smaller socket could well do it, the manifold nuts are only soft (ish) and with the heat they tend to even more so. other option is to wind another nut down the remainder of the thread and lock up tight to the nut thats in place. then using the original nut, try and undo - could well shift the whole stud from head which is normally easier to remove once loose. you may be able to get a small pair of stillsons or pipe grips on the nut, these tighten the more force you put on them. if thy have been replaced with brass nuts they would be very easy to chisel off, even using a sharp screwdriver. ste
Re: Nut splitter How do they work.Don't, whatever you do, use a cheap "stud extractor' they are so cheaply hardened that they snap off level with the stud.
Now you are seriously unscrewed. Can't drill it out as the drill is softer than the "Extractor". Lots ot rust breaker/release oil and a huge amount of patience, we're talking a week or more of daily applications, and a bit of gentle forward and back ( Ask your missus ) will do it. Plenty of oil and always back your thread. It's a machine. We are human. We will win as long as we take the time to think about it. If it is not working stop. Take a break. Come at it from a different direction and catch it when it is not expecting it. If you need something done quickly just ask a busy woman then get the f"k out of her way.

Re: Nut splitter How do they work.If you can get a hack saw, or a really small grinder to it, you can take a slice off either side but not enough to touch the threads and then chisel or punch the two bits off. Even if you are 2 or 3 mm away from the threads a smack will do it as there isn't enough metal to resist.
On the other hand you could ask a local squirrel. Last edited by Frenchfarmer on Sat Mar 06, 2010 11:54 pm, edited 1 time in total.
