Cheeky request

Postby Sooty on Sat Jan 30, 2010 5:24 pm

I'm pretty new to the site having bought the 2.8TD SWB in November, and have tried to pick all the information out before asking the same questions over again. The info is all there and very useful, but my mechanical talent doesn't match my enthusiasm unfortunately.

I don't want to turn my Frontera into anything extreme as want to be able to drive to my girlfriend's (40 miles away) in reasonable comfort and safety, but I do want to get involved in off-road stuff (both PnP days and green laning) so would like to do a few mods.

So ...

... is there anyone that would help me do the following? I don't need it all doing at once, I don't mind travelling, and don't mind paying for your time, parts, etc.

- some sort of lift. Not sure if I need suspension lift, body lift or both, but I just want a bit more clearance.
- oil and filter change
- cambelt change
- rear light conversion
- snorkel
- anything else that is recommended for my intended use of the vehicle.

I'm in Bolton near Manchester, but don't mind travelling (within reason).

First you will need a suspension lift and more offroad bias tyres plus recovery points, take it from there with the modifications before you get into body lifts and stuff, incidently Ive not bothered with the body lift, havent found a reason for it.

I am in Kirkby and would gladly help you out.

We can sort something out

For the lift longer coils or spacers are required for the rear and longer rear shocks, the front can be adjusted but just tweaking the torsion bars.

Hi I wrestled with this one for a bit and I didnt realise for some time that some folk have two(or more) sets of wheels one set for offroad which they put on when they get to where that is.
As you already have mud tyres this could be an option although it may be awkward to carry them in a sport.
I still havent got around to do any laning or offroading but its going to happen soon.....
As most of my driving is on tarmac, I will probably get some suitable a.t. tyres when my mixup collection has worn out.

Although I have 2 sets of wheels, I'm not planning on swapping them over too often. The thing was bought to go off-roading so that's where I'm hoping it will spend most of its time - once its in a fit state.

I have no offroad experience to speak of, but I think I would go for a.t. tyres which give good return and performance on tarmac and give you a bit of grip offroad, but if its for off road most of the time you'll have to sacrifice a bit of mpg when you do the 40miles to see your girlfriend and use the mud tyres.A friend of mine had grizzly claws mt tyres on his discovery and they wore down very quickly but he is a tree surgeon and was out in it all day on tarmac and off road. He's running on bfg a.t's now and is very pleased with them.
