Re: Technical help and advice wanted please?Ask for his price for the cam part, you source it, Im sure someone could supply the vx time scale for the job and you can work out hourly costs, see if he is as we suspect having your pants down.
I do not know that engine well but as you are having the head off it isnt much more to get the cam replaced, old school here but not sure maybe you should have both replaced to account for uneven wear? On of the 2.2 guys will be along to let you know. Still think your paying about £300 to £200 to much. Ste

Re: Technical help and advice wanted please?I seem to recall the cams on this engine can break simply from using the wrong technique/order when loosening/tightening the cap bolts, hunt around it was posted in here not too long ago
Re: Technical help and advice wanted please?Has he priced for the followers ??,you will need to fit new cam followers as they wear to match the cam lobes.

Re: Technical help and advice wanted please?Just to add. The engine wouldnt run properly if at all and would have had a similar effect to the timing belt breaking, it would have caused damage to either the inlet or exhaust valves depending on which camshaft broke and the location of the break.
As a result it is very likely it was broken on removal.
Re: Technical help and advice wanted please? He rang this morning to tell me he had heard from the suppliers, there isn't a single camshaft in the country and he has to order one from Germany. Apparently my 2.2I is unusual in having belt driven camshafts????

Re: Technical help and advice wanted please? This is geting daft now. He did say that if I wanted high lift cams we could probably get them easily but obviously I'd need two, and that it would be openning a bit of a can of worms, which I took to mean extra ancillary components such as valves, pushrods, etc.
The thing to bear in mind, despite it being so bloody obvious that he must have broken the cam himself, is that he is a) well established and as a family we have all used him for years without problems. B) he is a genuinely nice guy who tries hard to please and to help. C) He knows he cannot bullshit me as I have done ground up restorations on other cars in the past, and D) he knows he gets repeat custom on our three cars as long as he does a good job. So all in all, I'm unsure now how to proceed, and have authorised him to go ahead and order. Fronty LWB '54 reg 2.2i SE 16v petrol in very shiny black metallic
Re: Technical help and advice wanted please?its a tricky one lloyd because you cant really prove 100% that he was the cause of the camshaft damage
cant you promt him as to how he thought it happened ? bearing in mind apart from using water the engine was running perfectly well ! didnt 4x4 bobbys link in an earlier post have any ? WHY AINT I GOT AN ALL SINGING & ALL DANCING SIGNATURE LIKE BOXY & DRIFTY ?

Re: Technical help and advice wanted please? What happened to copper head gaskets like they used to use in racing cars?
Would one be a permanent fix for all these Head gasket probs you are all having. If you need something done quickly just ask a busy woman then get the f"k out of her way.
