Does anyone know of any off-roading competitions around the Uk?

For comps you are best joining a local club, most hold trials events and such, they cost a few quid a year join and a fee for taking part.

Its a difficult one competing in a fronty....

RTV trials...from what I have seen when attending them and having a try, the fronty is too big, to be really competative a Jimny or Sj seems to be the way forwards...the courses I saw seemed to be about being stupidly tight sooner than being overly challenging...and with the fronty being longer and wider than a Jimny/Sj then you are gonna struggle...

Comp Safari...Massive amount of £££ will need spending to just get to the start line as safety regs are really stringent as a speed event...

Winch Challenges...Again will be big bucks to do this and you will end up trashing the car...

I know its all about taking part, and not in the winning, but I cant see the point in trying if you vehicle is gonna be pretty uncompetative...saying that if you could get a few fronties to do RTV trials then at least you could have some competition amoungst the VX's...

I am looking at putting on some competitions for our guys at the SE offroad site...but with my rules! Its kinda like a cross between rtv and rockcrawling rules...and the size of the truck is not really a limiting factor...which in my book is cool as I like big fat trucks!!!
The idea is that by making the obstacle tough, the beater trucks stand more chance of getting a win than the shiny big budget ones where the owners are scared of damaging them...

Extract of the rules I drew up for my events...(see if you can get a bunch together up there and have a go if you like!)

Xtreme trials

These are held again at local farms and are great fun. The aim of these competitions is to provide competitive off road challenges which can be won by a vast cross section of vehicles.

The rules are pretty straight forwards, and are a cross between rtv trials and US rock crawling rules.

In brief;

An entrance fee is charged (normally £20) per driver, and the winner takes the bulk of everyone’s entrance fee home (or to the pub) with them. One vehicle may have more than one driver but each competing driver must pay the entrance fee. (That way both you and your misses can compete against each other using the same vehicle). A prize is also awarded from the entrance fees for the most acrobatic moment of the day-chosen by a vote at the end.

There are no classes, so anything goes in the vehicle department. (Some farmers do not allow dumper tyres as the chew the ground up to much-but we will advise before the event)

Vehicles don’t need to be road legal or roadworthy.

Vehicle can be solo operated or have a single spotter/winchman. This must be the same person throughout the event. This can be the driver of another solo vehicle.

The object of the exercise is to get through a series of coned gateways for each obstacle.

The gateways are wide (unlike rtv) so it doesn’t matter if you drive an sj or a hummer on 44” boggers.

You are allowed to stop, reverse, shunt as many times as you like with no penalty points.

The cones are placed to make the obstacle challenging and you have 3 mins to do it in.

You get points for completing the obstacle, hitting the cones results in points deduction.

Bonus points will be awarded for the best time for cleanly completing each obstacle.

These courses are tough, but you can opt to forfeit some obstacles should you wish, but you lose the points for it. You can forfeit an obstacle to repair your vehicle should you wish.

Different obstacles carry different points depending on difficulty.

Points are awarded for partially completing an obstacle, so its worth having a try even if you dont think you will fully make it.

Your 3 minutes starts on the judge’s whistle or horn and ends when the whistle of air horn blows. Winch cables must be fully wound on your winch at the start of the obstacle. At the end safely exit the obstacle by the quickest route so the next person can go.

Use of a single spotter/winch man is permitted per vehicle. Strop assistance is allowed from your spotter. Winch safety must be exercised if used (see code of conduct below).

1/2 points for the obstacle will be awarded if winch is used. Using strop assistance from spotter or trees carries no penalty so ingenuity is rewarded!

Breaking any of our group rules (see code of conduct) will result in either points from that obstacle being forfeited, exclusion from the event or exclusion from our group.

At the end of the trial the points are tallied up, bonus points added for best times on the obstacles and the winner announced.

hope this helps you mate....have a go and have fun!!
