removing brown stains from drivers seat

Postby harry on Wed Dec 23, 2009 6:49 pm

today i had to use a back road near norwich in Ringland Hills, i came to the top of a steep hill and there was a car waiting to go down, there was a transit 1/2 way done sliding mostly it was solid ice, he got near the bottom about 150 yards and the small car started to go down very slowly he made it sliding a bit, i thought no problem a transit and a small car ,ive got a 4x4 bf goodridge big wheels so started going down, got 1/3 down touching the brakes but still moving forwards, , then i started going down sideways for a few yards, nothing to do but hoped to stop then i went from sideways to backwards, thought pooh shall i try to stop by accelorating up the hill, didnt work still went backwards downhill, it stopped so did a 3 piont turn to face downwards 1/2 way done by now. went a few yards with foot touching the brake and started going sideways then backwards again, stopped again did another 3 piont turn and managed the final 1/3 going forwards...... relised 4 wheel drive doesnt mean anything on a steep downhill ice slide. had to brake if not i would have gone down at 40 mph and into the river at the bottom, now just got to clean the seats

When she goes she goes i have done it a couple of times and it makes me  I have learnt to use low on hills and don't touch the brakes as the engine will brake for you feet of all the pedals when going down hills
All the gear but no idea

Sometimes going down hill in icey conditions i use to keep the wheels as close to the kurb as possible to use these to slow down as you can just kiss them with the wheels , some suggest putting it in reverse going down hill , never tried this, but next time i will try it on mud to see if it works , Recomendations fornext time you try this is to fit black bin liners to seats ,and dispose of when manouver completed

Descents on slippery surfaces, select 4wd,select low ratio, determine maximum speed, engage the appropriate gear, pull away & remove feet from the area of the pedals, let the car go down the hill under its own control.NEVER touch the brakes as this will be when everything starts to work against you, generally in an uncontrollable manner :(

all very good in thery but i used 1st for 2 seconds to get moving then i was away on free fall, the only possible solotion may have been reverse but when youre going sideways done a hill i think its a case of waiting to stop. by the way no kerb just a 2foot tall grass verge. managed to stay in the middle at least will put some bin liners for seat next time. havent had car long forgot i had low ratio

Being serious here Harry, you could do worse than having some instruction on a skid pan, there was one in Fakenham, not been that way for a while but worth a look. But do it in your own car as sliding in an automatic has a different correction technique to a manual

Limited use in this case, been there done that i drive autos 12-13 hours a day, unforunatly the skid pan didnt have a 1-6 possibly steeper hill to slide down. only a guess there as didnt measure it when drifting down like in slow motion but dam steep, i will remember low ratio next time or turn round like the person did behind me as he watched from the top, no damage done so ended up a fun experience
