Frontera Sport 2.2 Service

Postby Jollyrodger on Sat Dec 05, 2009 12:50 pm

Hello folks,
First of all let me appologise for my ignorance in all things mechanical regarding 'Frontys'
I have a Fronty B series 2.2 petrol sport that needs a service (V reg). I've been phoning around for prices up here in Aberdeen and I'm getting quoted between £150 to £250 to get the job done. I'm now thinking about taking on the job myself so I have a few questions to ask the more experienced Fronty owners out there.
Is it a difficult job for a novice to tackle?
As far as parts go: If I get a filter kit comprising of oil, air and fuel filter...HT leads and spark plugs and new oil, is that all I need for the job?
Your help would be most appreciated.
PS If there is anybody from the Aberdeen area looking in who would like a 'homer' give me a shout.
Merry Christmas to you all.

For a basic service you have it just about covered, give yourself a couple of hours and you will save a fortune.
Ive not changed an oil filter on B series though I believe they can be a bit fiddly.
One option is to take it to kwikfit or the like they will change the filter and oil for around £20 it will cost more in oil and filter and you wont have the mess
All the rest is easy.

Hi bud.
It depends on what kind of service the car requires. You tell this by the mileage and your service book details.
If you wish to do a full service, you will require:

Set of spark plugs
Fuel, air and oil filters
Correct engine oil.

That should do you until you have checked everything else such as the brakes for wear.
You shouldnt need to but leads unless you are having a problem.

Lubricate all door pins and latches, and bonnet catch.
Clean the top of the battery and if it has removable tops, check the levels are above the plates.
Check the gearbox and axle levels ant top up if required.
Get a grease gun and lubricate the propshafts at the uj joints.
Check and adjust tyre pressures and condition of tyres.
Check wiper blades and washers are in good condition and adjust washers where needed.
Check all lights for operation.
Check the colour of your coolant when checking the levels. If its week or rusty looking, drain and fit the correct amount of antifreeze then top up with water.
Top up any fluid levels where needed.
That should keep you going unless you find anything that need done.
No boubt i will have missed something, but that will be corrected by someone.
If your brake pads are low and need replaced, if you are not mechanically minded, I would suggest you dont touch them yourself. Get someone to do them who knows what they are doing, and watch the job being done so you can do it the next time.
I always advise this as being a mechanic myself, i have seen some disasters in my time because of badly done brakes by DIY brain deads.
Hope that helps you mate.
Regards, Keith.

When buying the timing belt do I buy just a belt or the kit?

Get the whole kit, the tensioner and bearing will have the same effect as the belt snapping should they collapse, in fact is most likely 50/50 bearing/belts snapping that cause problems

Remember, if unsure ask..........if not confident don't do it on your own, try and get a fellow fogger to do/help/show you or entrust a garage. especially when your doing braking systems.

fog will always help you where it can.(but you know that already)
