Strange Day

Postby country_Est on Mon Nov 23, 2009 1:20 am

trange day.

First Sunday I have had to my self for a few months so the plans were

Dependant on the weather.

If dry:

Go to clay pigions with wife and kids,
Take the dogs for a walk
Swap the tyre round on the wifes toyota.
Try the new wellies on the fronty.

So off to bed on Sat night.

04:20AM Old dog starts howling as thunder storm breaks overhead.
Get up let the dogs in out of the kennel & back to bed with them in the bedroom.

08:00 Alam goes off, Nice sunny Morning. Everybody up bacon sarnies coffee and all ready for the off.

9:45 Just as we are ready to set off starts peeing down. Kids deceide not to come with us but me & mrs set off.

10:15 get to clays, stay in car for 30 mins still rain eases.
10:45 Good round of clays with out too much rain.

go home take the dogs for a walk while still in the wet gear.

Have a cofee and sarnie while watching last weeks Dr Who while shower passes over.

Now its dry only 2 more jobs to do.

1) Front to rear the tyres on the wifes toyota. Did the drivers side but on the N/S couldnt get the locking wheel nut to shift on the rear. So gave up with that after a lot of swearing.

2) Try the new tyres on the fronty. Rears fit just fine litfted the diff 1 1/4" Well pleased.
then tried the fronts. DISASTER... couldnt get either front wheel off. Undid all 6 wheel nuts, BUT they just wouldn't shift. Kicked them to pooh, hit them with a hammer and a a bit of 2x2 but still no joy.

Does anybody have any tips for removing stuck wheels....

Cheers

Trev.

I would try spraying a ton of wd40 into anywhere I could get it and then leave overnight. Then next day spray again and hit with rubber mallet...

If that didnt work, I would ask on the forum for some ideas

The alloy wheels basically weld themselves to the rusty steel hubs...same as you get with steel bolts into alley casings....

If smacking them from the rear doesnt help and they wont budge, then there is another technique I have done...but I wouldnt recommend it...

Refit wheels nuts and then undo all the nuts by 1 complete turn, so they are still well on there but are not actually holding the wheel in place...

Then drive the car slowly in a tight circle, both ways and it should free em off...if this doesnt work repeat, but try hitting the brakes from 5mph or bumping gently over a kerb....

Do one side at a time...

The wheels wont fall off the car doing this, but you will use the weight of the car to break the alley/steel weld...which is a lot more weight than a person can achieve with a hammer..the wheel itself can only move a few millimetres before it is supported by the nuts again, so cant go far...but thats all it needs to free em up...

Dont undo the bolts more than a turn each as you dont want the wheel to damage the stud threads...with just one turn out on the nuts the taper on the nut should stop the wheel from hitting the thread....

I wouldnt really say this is good practise...but is less likely to damage the wheel than beating the hell out of it, and is probably safer than clouting a car whilst laying underneath it while it is on the jack...
I have done it loads of times...havent damaged anything and it has done the trick...

Finally...lightly smear copper grease on the mounting faces before refitting the wheels...this will help it not to happen again in future...

Hope this helps

Looks like I'm in trouble with the Mrs's again...
She asked me what I'd most like to do to her body...
Apparently "Identify it" is not the correct answer!

I do the same as what gregster has done - drive it back and forth a few times with loose nuts - works a treat!

I do the same, also you could try parking the wheel hard up against the kerb, turn the steering wheel from side to side and they should come loose.
