Just wondering if anyone can tell me anything about changing the wheel bearings on an astra, not the newest model, the one before. Mates been quoted £180 to do 2 corners and says the garage need a vice to do it?
Are they not like fronty ones where they can just be done by hand?

Its the front bearings on a 2000, 1.6 16v
Found the parts on autovaux http://www.autovaux.co.uk/LoadPortal.aspx?cnum=161&tabid=5&vnum=128 but not sure which he needs at the mo. I know he doesn't have ABS. Can you tell me anything about the fitting of these bearings as this is what he (and i) am unclear on. Quiten hazel do a replacment bearing kit
so should be avalible at most good part factors VX astra mark4 year 1998-2005 engine 1.6i 16v all these are for front bearings hub stud =5 with sensor wheel RPM part # Qwb114 hub stud =5 without sensor wheel RPM part# Qwb 117 hub stud =4 with sensor wheel RPM part# Qwb113 hub stud =4 without sensor wheel RPM part# qwb 112 cheers

What about the installation? from what my mate said the garage need a vice but i'm assuming a press would be more likely (he's not very technical!) The pics don't really make it too clear how they would likely be installed although if its hub and bearings all in one i would have thought they would just slide on!?!

I have a mazda MX5 and I did them, as they were complete hub and bearing set up.. You won't need a vice, you will be surprised how easy the job is... Someone just called me today about doing his Astra front wheel bearings, but I am not doing them until 4th December...
You will need to take caliper and carrier off The disk will need to be split from the hub The replace in reverse....

as simple as that? the best quote he got was 180 for both but a few places said 180 each side

Other than a method of preventing the hub from rotating no other special tools required.
Wheel bearing (with coverplate) to steering knuckle.........90Nm / 66 lb.ft + 30 degrees + 15 degrees........ use thread lock on the bolts. Axle shaft........120Nm / 89lb.ft then slacken until it can be turned by hand,then tighten to 20Nm / 15lb.ft + 80 degrees,then if necessary tighten further until the split pin can be inserted
