gas vs gaslees for the sake of just doing body panels repairs is a gasless mig a good buy i saw one thats cheap £75 its a handymate gas less mig any body availble to comment honestly i not worried about how the weld looks long as it holds and passes mot

Hi Drinks, Gasless is ok if you are prepared to put up with slag as an option, you do have to beat it off:::
Gas gives a cracking weld, smooth and shiny, it does not have any slag on it::
Gasless if you want to weld on a Breezy day: but my optoin is still Gas::

as luck may have it i got an ARC welder dropped at my door and qualified welder into the bargain please do not rain this weekend

Nope it did not rain except sparks. The guy did his best the rods i got from b&q were cheap crap all we could find in the time window we had. Need to try find a mig missed on for £85 in the same town i live in round the conner cause i spent the money on paint and stuff for house, See what i can muster in the piggie bank

If your using cheap rods then warm them first. Gas mk1 for a while, wrapped in something. The coating is a powder, it turns into a gas and act like a shield to maintain the weld. So if its shocks from cold to around 2,000c it wil either flake off and leave the rest of the weld unshielded or not work.

Whe we used to use a lot of stick welding we had mini ovens in each welding pitch. Ideal for warming pies too

I must sya, I wouldnt entertain the idea of a cheap wire set. You get what you pay for.

it was rods from b&q i did not realise they were cheap crap but you live and learn. i never welded before never mind use an Arc welder the guy done his best.

Always worth using a box of rods learning a set, also worth getting a couple of bits of scrap same guage as those being welding to practice out of the job. Then when youre happy you can into the car, especially when doing positional stuff.

Ive never been taught stick and never done the tin our cars are out of either, so its a challenge for me, but have tried a couple of cheap wire welders and would go for the stick I was never taught than a wire gun, just never seems to penetrate.

At work I can penetrate a good 1/2 inch into the steel with cored wire 1.6 diameter and a molten pool at 13,000c it definately melts the pool

It was a rush job, I have plenty of sheet metal and angle iron out the back from an old shelfing unit that i can get some practice on
