Coming to England to buy a Fronty

I am from Guernsey in the Channel Islands, and I have given up trying to find a decent Fronty for a reasonable price over here, so I am planning on coming to England to get one

I am looking for a V6 from around 2000 to 2002, and have been looking around ebay, autotrader etc, however I have never bought a car in the UK before, and am not sure about a couple of things I would like help with . . . .

I am reasonably confident looking over the car itself, and also plan on buying from a dealer for a little extra security. My main concerns are the paperwork, and the risk of buying something written off / stolen etc.

This may be basic stuff to you guys, but I live on an Island you can drive round in 45 mins, so cars don't get nicked cos you cant take them anywhere, and you can't hide them for long, so any help with the following would be appreciated :

Log books (I think you call them the V5 ?), do they get faked, and how do you know ?

HPI Checks, do you do your own ? do you trust the garages ? who do you use ?

Clocked cars, how can you spot on a digital dash other then by comparing the car to the alleged mileage ?

Use one of the car status checking agencies, they check for outstanding finance and if the car is legal or if it has ever been involved in and insurance claim, they usually cost about a fiver so well worth it for peace of mind.
Never buy a car without the V5 no matter what they promise.

Is it common for V5's to be forged ? if so how do you spot them ?

Can anyone recomend a car status checking agency ? bearing in mind I will probably be trying to do this on a rubbish laptop in Mc D's at midnight

If you check with the agency they will let you know about the V5, they generally dont get forged but just check the details with the chassis number and MOT, the tax status can be checked online.

When you get your Fronty and if you have the MOT certificate,you can get all the MOT history here as well. I checked my Fronty's MOT history from here and it was interesting reading.

You could try mytextcheck ( https://www.mytextcheck.com/ ). You just text the reg to 83600 and they send you a text back with the info for a mere £3.

Plus, if you have a look at the site they offer a £5000 guarantee that thier info is accurate. I think you need a contract mobile for it to work though as the replies are counted a premium rate messages or somesuch.

Thanks for all that guys, you would not believe the amount I have learned over the weekend about buying cars in the UK !

Anyway, the end result is that I have found a car, done the checks I can do from here, and paid a small deposit to secure it until the weekend.

I am flying over on Saturday to view a nice low mileage 52 reg V6

And presuming it is as good as it all looks I will be a Frontera Owner again before the day is out
