Hmmm... It seems that after asking a fellow member recently to do some towing for me I inadvertantly filled his DIESEL car with half a tank of PETROL at the end of the day.
Easily done considering I havent had a diesel car for over 10 years but I felt a proper twit as when I filled the tank earlier in the day I double checked to make sure I had the diesel pump in my hand.
Oh well, Im guessing the moral of the story is if you are filling someone else's car make sure you have the right pump before filling. Thankfully no damage appears to have been done but Im crossing my fingers for the long haul anyway.

I managed to fill my diesel astra (before i got my 2.3) with petrol in Bristol. It was in Sainsburys and instead of a black hose for the diesel they have yellow. When I got towed to the nearest pumping out garage (£150 not covered on brakedown cover as it was driver error but they got me there at least) the young guy there said" Zainsburys woz it zir?" So its well known locally. A friend told me over the phone ,he is a mechanic and I phoned him first, that it is possible for a diesel to run on a mixture of one part petrol to eight parts diesel. Unfortunately, I didn't notice in time and there was too much in the tank. , but its worth knowing. Last week in France, I nearly put petrol into our diesel espace. Again it was the colour of the pipes that confused me.It was only my wife shrieking at me that stopped me.

It's easy done, I put diesel in a petrol once luckly I realised I had the black pump in my hand pretty quick...only got about 3 ltrs in, so filled to the brim with (then) 4star. Double lucky the car was almost out of fuel.
Chap I work with has done it twice, both times about a tenners worth of diesel in a petrol. First time he was lucky and realised at the petrol station and didn't start the car (think the garage next door charged him 30notes to drain the tank), but the second time cost him a few quid to get the car off the motorway and the whole system flushed.
The greatest lesson in life is to know that even us idiots are right sometimes
