I have possibly found a donor motor..
A "W" reg 2.2DTi with an AUTO box,
and Mine a "X" reg 2.2 petrol...
How much difficulty would it be to put the diesel engine into my petrol Frontera?
Would the exisiting clutch fit straight in ?
Any local experts in Ayrshire area, ( I am about 5 miles from the Drumclog course..)
but have no premises to do this change over...
This would also leave a full LWB Frontera for spares ............

Sorry I should have said my car is a SWB and the doner vehicle is a LWB... PS the donor car has an autobox problem.... I prefer the SWB....

The only fronty i no of that's not interchangeable (big word phew) is the 2.0Lt petrol.so the engine should fit but you will have to change mostly everything. if i were you i would change the auto box for the manual. but that's just my opinion.

Can of worms comes to mind.......
You will need a Dual Mass Flywheel & clutch kit for the Dti You may need a different bell housing to get the clutch operating arm into the right relative position, due to the above Your gear ratio`s & differential ratios will not be ideally matched to the engine characteristics
Aside from the engine you will need to transfer.........
Fuel tank plus the pipework & filter The exhaust system ..(LWB & SWB are not directly interchangeable) The ECU The complete wiring loom (to accommodate Fuel heater, glow plugs, fuel pump electronics, etc ) The vacuam pipes & associated solonoids The radiator The instrument pod (different function lamps)

Sorry bud, while all things are possible it would be a serious amount of work, have you looked into using an Omega bottom end & retaining your top end ??

puffing a lot of smoke.....
I think I will need to check this out more thoroughly...
Head off , get it checked..
While its off check the piston's for movement...
There was a rattle at 2500 revs, and I was told it was a wee end !...but I don.t know exactly yet...
Didn't want to pay £300 to do the head then end up doing work to bottom end as well...and spending about a grand all in..

One at a time, what colour smoke & when does it do it.....if I drive about 500yds , the smoke dissappears
Cold start WHITE Hot start WHITE Acceleration WHITE Even load WHITE Over run BLACK
.....If revved above 3000 revs, you can see black smoke, white smoke seems to disappear..warmer it gets
Think I have it right... Also seems gutless for a 2.2 i..so I don't know if all above is relative
I had a 2.0i (1992 model, which was quite quick)

White is water vapour, that is normal at start up (particularly cold)on a petrol engine
Black smoke on over run is oil being drawn down the valve guides, indicating the are becoming worn.

The white smoke clouds out the back for a long while... I will strip the head off the engine and work from there...get it sent away for full rework job.. I will check piston's if there is any play...etc I did a compression check and all cylinders were in the region of 220.... Engine sounds sweet enough when ticking over... So I reckon I better start somewhere......
