Its front wheel drive with some sort of hydro diff that locks the rear wheels when they start to slip. No low range box as far as I know.

At a guess from what I have read about them they are a slightly more hadcore version of a soft roader.

For a family car yes, not as an offroader, its not practical to modify or fix if you break it.

The only new car that is easy to modify on a budget is the suzuki Jiminy everything eles is to technical and expensive.

there is no longer a market for proper off roaders it`s all about style an on road handling,

Landcruisers are cool dwifty...my fj60 will be getting back on the "road" at some point...awesome motor..do miss it..have been through some right scrapes with the old girl and even though 200k on the clock, still runs sweeeeet! Just rust probs but its an early one...later ones are much better.
Fancy a VX 4.2 sometime soon as a tow rig....and then.... (I know I wont be able to leave it alone!!)
