Using 4x4 on Wet Roads

Postby darrenm1eqn on Thu Feb 05, 2009 4:16 pm

Hi is it possible to use my Frontera in 4x4 Hi Ratio on wet roads or not ? ,

Reason i'm asking is that with the snow today all the side roads were full of snow but the main roads were clear but wet.

So bassically if you cant would it have ment me going into 4 wheel drive for the side roads but then having to select 2wd for the roads which were clear...

If so that would be a pain as the side roads were only aprox 100 metres long and going fron 4wd and having to reverse to take it out then put into 2wd would be a major pain in the a***

Cheers Darren

Unfortunately the frontera doesnt have a centre differential so you CANNOT use 4wd on a hard surface like tarmac, concrete etc unless it is in a straight line or minimal distance.

Now then, you dont have to reverse every time you go from 4wd to 2wd. When engaging 4wd you have to stop, then select 4wd (HI or LO) and move on. You can shift from 4wd to 2wd on the move without stopping and without having to reverse to unlock the hubs.

This is particularly useful if you are only doing short road sections, maybe 3 to 5 miles. There is nothing to say you cant drive with the hubs engaged all the time but in reality it does increase fuel consumption a small bit and makes the car fee like the handbrake is on a notch. I would however unlock them for anything over 3 or 4 miles.

However, having said that I myself have used 4HI for the best part of 15 to 20 miles on road before I knew what I was doing. Having said that though it was under icy conditions so the wheels could have slipped a bit and dissipated the wind-up somewhat.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!
